In 1912 the town post office was moved to its current location on Main Street east of Westwood Drive; it remained there until 1959 when it became part of the newly formed Inyo County seat of Atwater Village. (Atwater Village was incorporated on November 15, 1959.) According to the United States Census Bureau, Grand Terrace has a total area of , all of it land. The Mono Mountains are located nearby and can be seen from many parts of town; they are said to be "the most beautiful mountains I have ever seen." Asphalt exists only along one stretch of Main Street which connects downtown with Fruitvale and Westwood Drive; elsewhere streets are gravel or dirt surface with few if any amenities such as sidewalks or streetlights. There were no businesses open during my visit other than two convenience stores opened about 2 years ago by local ranchers who sell groceries and gasoline

Grand Terrace is a small town located in the west San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded in 1867 by George and Emma Smith, who named it for their granddaughters, Grand Terrace being the highest point on the town's east side. The Smiths were among the early settlers of what is now Fresno County. When California became a state in 1850, much of the area east of slopes 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) above sea level was included within Kern County. In 1861, when that county was split into San Joaquin and Fresno counties, Grand Terrace became part of Fresno. The name has been changed several times over the years to avoid confusion with nearby cities such as Fresno and Bakersfield. The first store in Grand Terrace opened in 1868. A post office was established at Grand Terrace in 1870; it continued to be operated until 1915. Manufacturing began around this time; early products include saddles and bridles, cheese and eggs, flour sacks and other goods made from cottonseed oil or animal fat. The first school opened in 1870; it continued operation until 1959. In 1886, local ranchers decided to open a cattle ranch on some high ground near present-day Northridge; they named it "Terace" after their home village of Tersahem (now Turlock). The ranch soon grew large enough that its owner donated land to make an even larger community – including streets and a courthouse – called "Terace II". This new community failed to materialize due to lack of population growth or money available for development; however, later residents renamed it "Grand Terrace." As businesses started up around downtown Grand Terrace during Prohibition era (1920-1933), many people moved there from outside the area because drinking laws were more lax there than in other parts of California. After repeal of prohibition nationwide in 1933, most alcohol production stopped but some still continued until about 1941 due to government regulation which prohibited alcohol sales inside military bases closed during World War II The population increased rapidly following World War II as farmers turned their attention towards growing crops instead of wine making or whiskey distillation; industry slowly died away as well except for a few small businesses providing essential services like trucking materials between communities across central California
In 1852, the area around Grand Terrace was part of Rancho San Rafael, a Mexican land grant to John C. Fremont. The name "Grand Terrace" was given to the terraced land in 1865 by General Pershing because it was thought to be one of the finest prospects in California. The first home on Grand Terrace was built in 1853 by James P. Hickey and his wife Hannah, who also ranched cattle and hiked the Santa Cruz Mountains. In 1861, George Hearst bought some of Hickey's property and moved his family from their original log cabin on Warm Springs Creek to their new home at 5200 block of Grand Terrace. Hearst's grandson, William Randolph Hearst, became one of America's most powerful business people and bought much of what is now Los Angeles County in 1919. He donated many acres along Grand Terrace to make way for what is now Koreatown.
