Grand Terrace, California is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 7,292 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The town was platted in 1892 by George H. Hill and named after his estate on Mount Olympus in Greece. Hill had purchased land adjacent to what is now Grand Terrace from John Sutter in 1875 for $1,000 (). He also built a home there which still stands. Hill owned much of what is now downtown Grand Terrace, as well as some of the surrounding rural areas including Aliso Viejo and Spring Valley. He died in 1902 and bequeathed most of his property to his two daughters: Mayme (1872-1954) who established herself as a real estate agent and Mrs. Arthur Laughlin (1878-1965), who founded nearby Chatsworth (). Laughlin began developing the area around her home into what is known today as Downtown Grand Terrace (), with development continuing until it was annexed by Los Angeles in 1924 (). After annexation, many residents left downtown for Chavez Ravine () or other new neighborhoods elsewhere within Los Angeles (). Grand Terrace is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Victorville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Grand Terrace was George Sperry who arrived in 1851. He named his land "Sperry's Mesa" after himself and his friend and mentor Ebenezer Sibley. In 1857, John Cottrell purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of Rancho San Bernardino from Juan Bautista Altaño for $5,000 (). Cottrell established a small ranch operation here until 1861 when he sold most of his holdings to David Hines. In 1870, James Fenton bought 160 acres (60 ha) of Rancho San Bernardino from David Hines for $10,000 (). Fenton built a house here on what are now known as Constitution Avenue and Main Street. In 1875, Western Union Telegraph Company set up shop on Congress Way near today's Grand Terrace High School after being granted an extra two miles of cable by the US Post Office Department because the original line had been destroyed by fire in 1876. The company continued to operate until it went bankrupt in 1912. The town started to form around this time with some people moving into Fenton’s house and others starting farms or businesses like A&P grocery store on Main Street or Ponderosa meatpacking plant on Constitution Avenue which still operates today as one of the largest packing plants east of the Mississippi River . A post office called "Grand Terrace" was established in 1879 but no residents ever moved there so it became just another name for Victorville until 1906 when General Electric began construction on their new power plant here and many workers moved into Victorville including those who worked at GEH which led to the incorporation of Grand Terrace as a city on November 14th 1906 under then City Manager Harry Ladd (). At its incorporation there were only about fifty residents living in what would become downtown but within two years that number had grown to over one thousand due largely to business growth at GEH . On July 1st 1925 Mayor Willard Wiman opened up grand opening ceremonies for America's first air-conditioned high school located across from GEH - Bellmont High School which added even more students to downtown who walked or took public transportation all day long! By 1930 there were over three thousand residents living downtown with more than four hundred businesses catering to them including twenty-four hospitals and thirty-six shopping centers !
