Grand Terrace, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 24,909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first Anglo settler in what would become Grand Terrace was George Witherspoon who arrived on December 12, 1847. He and his wife Emma founded a small farming community called "Witherspoon's Colony" near present-day Pasadena. In 1850, Witherspoon sold his land to John Smeaton who named it after himself—Witherspoon Station—and began developing it as a town with two stores, three homes and twelve acres (6ha) of ground for agriculture. On October 1, 1852 Witherspoon's Son Cyrus opened the first store in what would become Grand Terrace and this started the local industry which continues to this day; selling goods from farm to consumer within walking distance of its original store square today. In 1857–58 an Act of Congress provided forgrant lands comprising . These were located south of Girdwood Avenue between Conejo and Moorpark Streets east of Isleta Road north of Lankershim Boulevard and west of Willow Canyon Boulevard (now Exposition Boulevard). The grantees were local businessmen Jepson & Sons (John Smeaton family), Pemberton Brothers (Christian Pemberton), Richardson brothers (George Richardson) and others including James Hogg who came overland on horseback from Illinois in November 1860 looking for new land to homestead near Lancaster about 25 miles northeast of Los Angeles. On January 20 1861 Hogg filed an application with Jay Cooke for 8 blocks patented Lots 5 North East corner lots 2 West side streets 3 East side streets on lot #2 being 10x15 feet (.40x30m). Cooke granted him permission to build his cabin thereon July 4th 1861 subject to due process requirements ensuring that all persons named therein had resided there before grants were made public notice thereof by proclamation or ordinance published under my hand at City Hall September 1st 1861 commanding such publication if required thereto by law etc., etc.—the first structure ever recorded in Grand Terrice! However little attention was paid by passersby until 1865 when one Mr Fenton noticed someone’s smoke rising from the top story windows next door so he decided to investigate… soon thereafter he found out that southerners were also living hereabouts! The town began to lose its importance as an agricultural center and by 1926 it had only about 100 residents remaining. However, it continued to be a popular tourist destination until the early 1960s when there were no more factories or other commercial activity in the area. Today, Grand Terrace is a small community with around 50 residents that consists mostly of retirees and their kids who live on farms nearby. The only commercial activity here is located on Ferris Boulevard which offers souvenirs, food items, and some rental propertyoptions
The first permanent settler in the area was Manuel Fontana, who arrived in 1847. He named his land "Grand Terrace" after the highest mountain peak in California. The area was formally annexed by San Francisco in 1856. In 1865, a group of farmers founded what is now known as Pacific Gas and Electric Company on Grand Terrace Boulevard. The company built a power plant on the site which created much controversy at the time because it used water from San Francisco Bay to generate electricity. In 1906, during World War I, Japanese Americans were interned on Angel Island and many of them lived on Grand Terrace until their release in 1945. In 1969, developer Robert Moses began construction of Mt Diablo Park across from Grand Terrice
