Grand Terrace, California is a small town in Alameda County, California. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of San Francisco Bay. The name "Grand Terrace" first appeared in 1868 when it was given to a large tract of land lying east of what is now Oakland and west of Berkeley. In that year, James Waddell Post bought 321 acres (137 hectares) of this grant for $2,500 from Abram Stowell Reid. He renamed the tract Grand Terrace and here he established himself as a farmer with his family. In 1876 Post sold his interest in Grand Terrace to John Leland Stanford Jr., who had founded Stanford University six years earlier. In 1886 Stanford donated an additional 640 acres (247 hectares) to the town for use as public land; this made Grand Terrace one of the few towns in Alameda County not subject to rent by university administrators. Over time, various businesses have been located at or near Grand Terrace: retailer JCPenney opened its first store there in 1901; Kress Paper Company began production there in 1924; and Hewlett-Packard's Palo Alto Research Center was founded on research property adjacent to the community in 1941. The last business closed its doors in 1984. Today, most residents work outside the community or commute into San Francisco or Oakland; however, several local restaurants remain open year-round including Sushi Zen and Chili’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina - two blocks away from downtown Grand Terrace on Third Street between Broadway and Park streets). In recent decades (since Proposition 218 passed through both houses of Congress), some residents have begun moving back into their homes while others continue working outside the community or commuting into San Francisco or Oakland depending on their needs/ wants/ desires...

Grand Terrace was founded in 1887 by George W. Smith and his wife, Anna. The first store on the site was built in 1889. In 1905, the grocery store became the first real estate company in town. In 1913, a post office was opened at Grand Terrace and remained in operation until 1959. The original First National Bank building (now known as the Western Motor Company Building) was erected in 1907 and remains active today as a business center for the community.
