The name "Grand Terrace" comes from the Rancho Grande de Grand Terrace which was given to Juan Bautista Altaoco by Governor Pio Pico in 1847. Altaoco had been born in Mexico and came to California with his family in 1837 as part of the Mexican War of Independence. Afterward he became one of the most successful wine growers in California and his rancho became known as one of the most prestigious estates in all of Northern California. In 1906, Edmond O'Neill purchased the Rancho Grande de Grand Terrace from Altaoco's son-in-law José Moreno and renamed it "O'Neill's Park". In 1916, Alice Paul and her husband Dr. Marcus Garvey moved to Grand Terrace from Brooklyn, New York and began working on their anti-war crusade called Black Nationalism or Pan Americanism which led to their arrest and imprisonment during World War I on charges related to treason against America. They were released after General John J Pershing offered them clemency on humanitarian grounds because they were not connected with any international conspiracy theories then popular among certain sections of society). Afterward, Alice Paul worked tirelessly for social justice causes throughout her life until her death in 1965 at age 92; she was cremated without formal rites within hours of her death so that she could be buried nearby beside Martin Luther King Jr.. In 1978, after years of planning by local officials and community members, an open-air shopping mall called The Grove was built adjacent to O'Neill's Park; it remains one of Santa Rosa's most important commercial districts today. The town of Grand Terrace, California was founded in 1879 by Colonel George B. Anderson and his wife, Lillie. The name “Grand Terrace” was chosen because it had been one of the original towns in Alameda County. The town was incorporated in 1880, and soon became a popular tourist spot for visitors to the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1915, Grand Terrace became an incorporated city with its own government. The population peaked at over 10,000 in the 1950s but has gradually declined since then due to decreasing economic opportunities and competition from other nearby communities. Today, much of Grand Terace is abandoned or used as farmland.
The first settlers in the area were farmers who arrived in the 1800s. The name of the town, Grand Terrace, was given to it by General James H. Grant in 1885 after he defeated a band of Apache Indians at a place called Geronimo's Ridge.
