Grand Terrace is a farming town in the Santa Clara Valley, California, United States. It is located on the south side of San Francisco Bay and has a population of about 125,000. The name originated from the Spanish word "grande", meaning great or large. The town was founded in 1849 by Captain George Waddell and his wife, Maria Amalia de la Cruz; they named it for their grandiose estate, Granada Hill. The Waddells were originally from Connecticut but moved to Northern California in 1839 to be near family friends who had settled thereabouts. In 1850, Captain Waddell donated land to build a school and church on what is now Grand Terrace Boulevard. In 1855, John Gasson opened the first store in what is now Grand Terrace Boulevard. By 1860, Gasson had developed three blocks of businessfrontage on Mission Street between Second and Third Avenues west of downtown San Francisco. In 1865 he sold his business piecemeal to other merchants until he had completed one block east of present-day Fourth Street cornering Mission Avenue NW with First Avenue NE; this became the nucleus of what would become Little Tokyo (now part of DowntownSan Francisco). In 1870–71 James Hargrave built a brick building at 5th and Grand Streets which served as the town's first Carnegie library (the cornerstone was laid on December 14, 1870). That same year saw another important milestone: when West Point Military Academy graduate Commodore John Doolittle became superintendent of public Instruction for Alameda County; Hargrave acted as his personal secretary/spokesman during this time period. In 1898 Mayor Donald Bestor designated North Park across First Avenue from North Park Elementary School as an open space within city limits to provide parkland for residents living around Grand Terrace Boulevard; that same year saw also construction begin on what would become Pacifica Radio station KPFA (channel 3), which began operations that day under the leadership of then-station manager Harry Partch using leased property at 814 Capitol Drive NW adjacent to today's KPFA studios just southwest of Market Street BART Station; thus commenced one Of America's most famous radio stations – KGO TV channel 4 – predecessor to today’s ABC affiliate KQED-TV

DeMille film producer and exhibitor Julius Manchester (1862-1936). During World War II, Grand Terrace served as a military base for American forces engaged in the Pacific theater. After hostilities ended in 1945, many local businesses closed or were sold off due to lack of demand from the general public or soldiers returning home. However, several new businesses began to open up during this time and today’s business district is one of its most popular areas. Today’s community has seen continued growth since its inception and continues to be a vibrant place where people come together to enjoy their lifestyles and share their culture. Some old timers still live here while others have left for various reasons but all agree that living here is one big family affair!
