The name "Grand Terrace" comes from its location on the edge of a bluff overlooking the city of San Bernardino. The bluff was named for General James Hays who served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of California. The history of Grand Terrace can be traced back to 1907 when George Washington Carver founded the farmstead here after purchasing land from Rancho Cuchuma Indian Nation members. carver initially planned to grow vegetables on his property but eventually decided to open up his land into a town, naming it after himself and his wife, Sarah Childs Carver. At first, most residents lived on their farms while others worked at local businesses such as Wernham’s grocery store or taught school in nearby Victorville. But within just a few years, many people had moved into town and started their own businesses. In 1911, when Grand Terrace became an incorporated town, Mayor Harry Alderney decided that it would be more efficient for all citizens to meet together once per month at the local library so that they could discuss important matters such as finances and public safety. This meeting led to development of what is now the downtown area which includes several businesses including Alderney’s law office and post office along with several homes dating back to pre-World War II days when this part of town was home to many farming families who raised livestock and processed food products like meatballs and cookies using handmade tools called “hammers” made from tree branches bent into even widths without nails or screws. Today, while some aspects of daily life remain unchanged (like shopping at local convenience stores), much has changed since then in terms of economy, technology, demographics and lifestyle choices among locals living near Los Angeles County Airport – one reason why Grand Terrace has comeeto be known as one of Southern California’s leading regional communities for business services around airport boundaries within commuting distance from both LAX terminals (Los Angeles International Airport)and Burbank (Rancho Cordova). In 1907, developer Edward H. Smith and his wife, Florence, purchased 4,000 acres of land northwest of downtown Los Angeles from the Tejon Rancho family. The area was then known as "The Prairie", and became one of the most important agricultural areas in Southern California. In 1916, the Smiths built a home on their new property that still stands today - Grand Terrace. They quickly became prominent members of LA society and politics, serving as mayors of both LA (1921-1924) and Beverly Hills (1945-1948). In 1943 they donated $10 million to UCLA in order to create its first football Stadium; it would be renamed Bruins Stadium in their honor in 1958. During World War II, the Smiths gave more than $100 million to support US war efforts including contributions to the United States Military Academy at West Point and military hospitals nationwide. Their philanthropy continued throughout the Cold War era with donations such as cash for arms purchases from Russia and China, medical supplies for Vietnamese refugees during Operation Homecoming (1965-1968), and other relief efforts. It is also interesting to note that Florence had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she died in 1984 but did not give up her dream of becoming anastahema - or a woman given life by God - which she believed could cure cancer. She was survived by her son William Siegel who runs her estate today.
