Grand Terrace is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 19,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on theipher of Interstate 10 and has a small business district near the airport. The following description of Grand Terrace was taken fromwikipedia: "Grand Terrace is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The community is located north of Riverside on State Route 9 about midway between Riverside and Claremont." The community was started by farmers in 1884 who named their settlement after themselves and their home village of Grand Tersace in Italy. The name stuck and residents continue to use it today. In 1907, when Interstate 10 was built through central San Bernardino County, the developers wanted to move the city's eastern edge away from I-10 so they built a dam across Mill Creek which truncated downtown Grand Terrice's original block square boundaries. Residents successfully lobbied to keep their downtown area while I-10 became an expressway connecting Los Angeles and Pasadena with new lanes going east-west into town center. By 2000, as part of efforts to improve public transportation options within town limits and attract more businesses to help support economic development, City Manager Rick Jefferies recommended that the name be changed back to "Grand Terrace" because it better reflects what its current residents do -- operate businesses adjacent to their homes."

In 1847, Nicolas-Jacques Conte developed a new type of cartridge that allowed for more powerful fire than the older cannon balls. This new cartridge was named after him, "Conte's Bullet." In 1857, John Brown & Company patented a new type of ammunition called "Bolt Action Rifle Ammunition." This ammo used a percussion cap with a bullet that was forced into an explosive charge in the center of the cap. When fired, this caused an explosion that created muzzle blast and damage to nearby objects. This ammo became popular among American soldiers during the American Civil War because it could be fired easily through tight quarters and its low recoil made it easy to control while firing.
Grand Terrace is a census-designated place in San Francisco County, California. The population was 15,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and sits on a ridge overlooking downtown San Francisco. The name "Grand Terrace" comes from Rancho Grande de la Joya, which was granted to Juan Bautista de Anza by Spanish Governor Alvarado in 1821. The grant extended along what is now Market Street between Mission and Polk Streets east to the Golden Gate Bridge and west to Sutro Heights. The first Europeans to visit Grand Terrace were Captain James Cook and his men who sailed up the Pacific Ocean on HMS Endeavour in 1779. They named the area after General Antonio Jose Mesa, commander of Mexican forces stationed at Presidio of Monterey onshore during this time. Mesa's grandson, Manuel Nieto y Ortega (1787-1868), opened an adobe rancho near present-day Market Street and Third Avenue in 1835 as part of his effort to promote agriculture in Marin County while resistance against Mexican domination continued throughout most of California's history. In 1857 he purchased land lying east of today's market street and Third Avenue from José Joaquin Moraga for $2,000 (). He later donated that land (now bounded by Third Avenue, Castro Street, Harrison Street) to the city for use as part of Grand Park across from City Hall. This event signaled change for Grand Terrace as it became one of several small villages dotting rural Marin County until railroads arrived with their new markets creating waves of development throughout Northern California during the late 19th century along with high density housing developments such as Richmond Heights and Sunset Beach just south of downtown San Francisco dating back to 1860s when steamboats began docking at Ferry Landing opposite Point Reyes Station on Sausalito Harbor making ferry service available for commuting purposes within minutes or less
The first white settler in what is now Grand Terrace was John C. Fremont, who arrived in 1849. The town began to form around this period, with a number of families coming to the area for economic opportunities and land purchases. By 1872, the population had increased to 350 people and development continued through the years. In 1907, the Imperial Irrigation District was formed and began providing water services to the town. The district also built a dam that created Lake Michigan which served as a major source of revenue for the town during this time. In 1945, Grand Terrace was incorporated as a city and has grown steadily throughout its history. Today, it has a population of over 10,000 people and additional businesses have been established in recent years catering to its growing community.
