Goleta is a small city in Humboldt County, California, located on the eastern edge of the Sonoma Coast. It has a population of about 41,000 as of 2010. The first Europeans to visit Goleta were Spanish missionaries in 1821. In 1847, the Mexican government granted Rancho Santa Rosa to James Wolkentin and his brother-in-law Donald J. Smith. In 1850, mining began at the nearby Anzio Mine and quickly enriched both men. With this new wealth came an influx of people from all over Northern Mexico and Central America who also started building houses and businesses in Goleta. The town began to grow rapidly, but not without some controversy: by 1861 it had more buildings than any other city in California north of San Francisco. In 1882, Goleta was incorporated as a city with its own Board of Supervisors; it became part of Redwood City when that city was incorporated in 1893. However, many residents voted against incorporation because they felt their town would only become another Redwood City like themselves (albeit much larger). A petition for secession from Redwood City was filed but never completed because no one wanted to leave Goleta’s large town center alone while they built up their own homes elsewhere (thecity boundary changed again after 1906). The 20th century was difficult for Goleta; through World War II it experienced significant bombing damage caused by American bombers during the Battle of the Bay Bridge which destroyed most of downtown Goletta; however, most residents kept their spirits high by hosting banquets and receptions during wartime shortages that made food available locally even if grocery stores were closed down. After WW II ended there were few opportunities for businesses growth until recent years when development has resumed including housing developments such as Vista del Carmelo and Park Place mixed use projects which have brought new life to downtown areas as well as increasing job opportunities for local citizens including paramedics who now work out-of-town events such as concerts or large festivals
