Wickersham built his home there and named it "Wickersham Rancho". The house remains standing today and is a popular tourist attraction. In 1851–1852, Wickersham also bought land at what is now downtown Goleta from José Joaquín Castro for $8 per acre (). Castro developed this land into the current downtown area which he called "Pueblo Viejo" (Old Town). In 1892–1893, Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed two churches – La Purísima Concepción and San Francisco de Asís – in Pueblo Viejo. In 1905, Gonzalo Sánchez purchased 1/4 mile (.50 km) of what is now Yosemite National Park from Hetch Hetchy Company for $5 an acre (). He named it "Zuma National Monument" () after Zuma Indian Chief Ulysses S. Grant (). Sanchez donated much of the park's land including Yosemite Valley () and Half Dome () to the US government as part of Treaty 7 (), which ended US involvement in World War I (). Yosemite National Park was established on these lands on October 26th 1913(). Zuma National Monument contains some of Yosemite Valley's most famous features such as Half Dome (), El Capitan (), Vernal Fall (), Aconcagua (), Ahwahnee Caverns (), Sentinel Rock ())
Goleta is a city in Sutter County, California, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Spanish word for "gorge" or "valley". The City of Goleta was incorporated on February 14, 1878. It became a part of Sutter County on April 6, 1892. Goleta's first post office opened in January 1879. The first store in Goleta was the Hennig Bros., which opened in 1880. A bakery followed soon afterwards and by 1886 there were two woolen mills and four tanneries operating in Goleta. In 1895 the town had 1 grocery store and 11 businesses including six livery stables, three newspapers (the "Governing Journal", the " Californian" and one started by Wm Fenton), one blacksmith shop, two doctors' offices, a hardware store and a number of residences including Dos Bichos House which still stands today as an example of Mission Revival architecture. The extinction of the Santa Clara Valley fire provided impetus to build new infrastructure such as water systems and schools that have been integral to Goleta's development over time: its current water system dates back to 1905 when it replaced an earlier system that used surface runoff from Moberly Creek; its school district date back to 1909 when it replaced an earlier district which relied on donations from local landowners; its present public transportation began with service to Goleta Station (now known as Westfield GO Station) starting in 1915; and its current streetlights were installed beginning in 1929
