Goleta is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 25,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto metropolitan area. The first people to live in Goleta were the Ohlone Indians who used the site of present-day downtown as their traditional home base and hunted and gathered food near creek mouths. The Ohlone built huts on a hill overlooking Goleta Creek for several years before moving downriver to what is now Salinas in 1824. In 1847, Mexican land grants were given to Mission San Francisco de Asís (founded by Franciscan missionaries) and Mission Santa Clara de Asís (founded by Californios). Rancho Laguna Seca was granted to Pedro Fajardo on March 20, 1848. This rancho extended from modern day Goleta eastward into Kern County until 1912 when it was divided between Hillcrest Ranch (now Menifee) and Atwater Ranch (now Coulterville). In 1863, Don José Castro acquired title to 6,000 acres south of downtown Goleta from Elisha Gray Otis. In 1868–69 he began construction on what became known as "Castro Park", which included a plaza with an artificial waterfall named after him, a botanical garden with over 100 species of plants, tennis courts, rifle ranges/amusement park and race track lies today next door to City Hall Plaza across from City Hall Annex building on First Street between Center Street & Elm Street NE corner of city limits

By 1920, Goleta had grown to over 1,000 residents and had its own police department. During World War II, Goleta played an important role as one of the final staging areas for troops heading into Japan. In 1951, Goleta adopted its current name - "Goleta" - after becoming part of the United States. On July 2, 1848, the California Gold Rush started in earnest and quickly turned into a frenzy. By August of that year, over two thousand men were working in what is now Goleta. The town was established on the site of present day downtown Goleta by Captain John Sutter and his group of Forty-Niners. The first post office was founded in 1849, and by 1850, Goleta had a population of around seventy-five people. In 1860, the first school opened in Goleta. The town eventually grew to a population of one thousand people by 1870. In 1902, Goleta became part of Imperial County and then Kern County when they were created from parts of Santa Clara County. On November 3rd, 1916, the townsite at 4381 N Street was annexed byGoleta as part of the city limits for Goleta which at that time had a population of six hundred people
