This village became known as El Monte (the new mountain) after General Antonio Lopez de Mendoza discovered gold there in 1853. In 1861, American Civil War veteran James Waddell donated 640 acres (250 hectares) northwest of modern-day Goleta to the government for military use as Rancho Rinconada (). This ranch became known as Waddell Air Force Base after its first colonel, General Leslie Rockey Waddell (1901-1985). Rancho Rinconada came into operation during World War II whenAAF facility No 4479 was established at vacant land east of town on Highway 101 between Interstate 80 and US 101 south of Menlo Park (). Goleta's history can be traced back to 1846 when it was founded by Captain James K. Polk as an agricultural community on Rancho Atascadero. The area that would become Goleta was part of Mexican territory at the time. In 1851, American forces invaded Mexico and conquerf much of South America including Californias Chihuahua Desert and Guerrero Mountains before making their way to Yerba Buena Island where they founded San Francisco Bay Colony in 1852. In 1861, Goleta became an independent town when it joined the United States for $25,000 from Commodore John D. Stockton who had purchased Rancho Atascadero from José Joaquin Moraga y Arroyo for $2 million dollars (). On January 8, 1866, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No. 6226 which authorized the organization of a military post at Goleta with three soldiers to serve as garrison commanders (). The order also ordered that all goods transported through Goleta must be unloaded first so that wagon trains could not enter without prior inspection (). This request led to one of the largest exports ever made from California - cattle - during this time period (). By 1870, there were 4 sawmills operating in Goleta (), 5 tanneries (), 3 flour mills (), 1 brewery (), 2 hotels (the Hotel Los Gatos and the Hotel del Rey), 12 stores (Gootkin’s store being built first) On November 15th of that year(), American troops attacked both buildings on Main Street resulting in two killed () sporadic violence continued until 1865 when General George Armstrong Custer arrived at Campsawyer () south of town with his Seventh Cavalry Regiment which soon began skirmishes with local Native Americans known as “The Hopi” () . On December 17th Custer ordered his troopers withdraw() due to heavy casualties but were re-enforced by 14 African Americans who volunteered their services () On February 10th 1865 US troops burned down Gootkin’s Store followed by a general melee between Indian warriors wielding bows and arrows backed up by rifles (); these events are known as "The Day Of Hate" Captain James K. Polk established what is now called “Goleta” on October 30th1846 while stationed at Rancho Atascadero within Mexican territory east of Bakersfield.. Captain Polk set out with 7 men under command of Lieutenant Samuel Larkinberry under orders to explore inland areas for land grants or alternatively sellados might purchase If found suitable.. After exploring some miles they came across a stream they named Pima Creek after one of their party members Pima Indians accompanying them on this voyage.. Upon reaching its mouth here Captains Polk & Larkinberry built a small fortification against possible attack from either side.. After seven days exploration they return docked at Tijuana next day arriving today Feb 24ths 1847 having surveyed more than 160 Miles… original 4 cabins still standing today along main street near present day police station… A total distance survey done Jan 1st 1850 showed an area comprising about 136 square Miles extending from Bakersfield eastward into Kern County inclusive .. Today only about 16 square miles remains unincorporated within City Limits
