What is Goleta, California? Goleta is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 47,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area and its Combined Statistical Area with San Joaquin County has a population of 1,023,515. The first Europeans to visit Goleta were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his group of sailors on their way from Mexico City to Peru in 1542. After sailing for almost three weeks across an empty ocean they sighted land about 120 miles (193 km) east of San Francisco on September 17, 1542. They named it Isla de los Fuegos because "the fire had kindled there" as they watched a powerful sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. The first permanent European settlement in Goleta was founded by Pedro Cámpora on November 3, 1836 as Rancho Buena Vista del Sacramento near present-day Hearst Castle. A second rancho was established two years later on December 14 by José Maria Bordón Reyes under grant from Mexican President Manuel María Menéndez y Montt. Goleta is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 26,584 at the 2010 census. Goleta is part of the Kern River Valley region. It lies on the Pacific Coast Highway just east of Bakersfield and north of Stockton. The first Europeans to visit Goleta were Francisco Peralta and José Joaquín de Borja in 1821 when they explored what is now Kern County. The town site was surveyed by George C. Moore in 1872, and named for General Mariano Rivera who had led Spanish troops against Mexican forces during the Californio Rebellion of 1846-48. In 1886, Goleta became one of nine towns in California that seceded from Mexico to form the United States because of various grievances including lack of education for Mexican Americans and discrimination against English-speaking citizens. In 1919, following World War I efforts by President Woodrow Wilson to create American Samoa as an autonomous territory within American Samoa; Goleta voted to become an incorporated city with one-third Latino residents under Spanish rule--the first such vote in California history. On October 22, 1923; Mayor Manuel Llanos convened a special election to select a City Council member from single member districts instead ofParty ward representation which would have favored Anglo incumbents over Latinos during that era; 54% Latino registered voters approved Incorporation into City Government On November 6th 1924; Los Angeles Police Department officer Manuel Gomez shot and killed incumbent City Councilman Roberto Valdez after Valdez refused orders to stop walking down Main Street with his dog pack while on duty outside City Hall; This event helped spark increased Hispanic activism within Goleta government which eventually led to its incorporation into city government Upon incorporation into city government; Goletas began electing their own mayor who would serve four year terms instead of two terms as set by state law at that time In 1957; Mayor Lorenzo Torres resigned due to health problems after being elected less than two months after taking office due to allegations he accepted bribes from developers seeking zoning change for their projects . After searching unsuccessfully for a new mayor for three years Mayor Juana Martinez finally selected her husband Reynaldo Martinez as her successor on December 2nd 1959 . She served until 1989 when she retired effective January 1st 1990
