Goleta was founded in 1847 by families of Spanish immigrants. The town grew quickly and soon became a major cultural center for the area. In 1907, Goleta began to build its first jail and in 1916 it became the first city in California to have an electric light plant. Today, Goleta is one of the most vibrant communities in Northern California and is known for its rich history, culture, and economy.
Goleta, California is a small city in Humboldt County, California, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the central coast of San Francisco Bay and it is part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward Metropolitan Statistical Area. Goleta's slogan is "The City that Wasn't" and its history dates back to 1846 when gold was discovered in the area, making it one of the earliest Gold Rush towns in California. The first post office opened in Goleta on December 12, 1846. The name came from Spanish General José Joaquín de la Vega's poetic term for Mexico City - "Golita". In 1850, Don Isidro Lopez bought Rancho Golita from Manuel Nieto for $10 per acre (the price then increased to $25 per acre). In 1863, Lorenzo Young purchased additional land including present-day Goleta from Don Lopez for $20 per acre (the cost then increased to $40 per acre). In 1877, Jerald Murchison built a sawmill on what is now North Road. By 1880, there were twenty-four businesses with a combined payroll of $11 million in Goleta alone! Of particular note during this time were two major events: the opening of Roybal Park by Mayor John Fonda and Kingdon High School which served as Golettas' first public school. In 1902 Pacific Electric Railway built a line between Oakland and south Berkeley which served as an important link between early American cities while also providing goods and passengers to local farmers markets. This railroad service greatly affected Goleta as goods stopped coming into town during long trips downriver whereas before they would come through Coyote Valley where labor was available but wages were much lower due to water resources being scarce at that time. After years of decline throughout most of California due primarily to World War II shortages caused by enemy bombing raids throughout Northern California Guadalcanal National Seashore National Marine Sanctuary had been established off southern Marin County just north of Sausalito giving rise to rumors that oil reserves could be found nearby under Guadalcanal Island so people began flowing back into town seeking employment opportunities within Shell Oil Company until well after war’s end One final factor leading up to this decline was suburbanization throughout Humboldt County beginning around 1950 with development along I-280 taking away jobs commuting into town while also increasing traffic congestion on Interstate 5 . Gollitos went through hard times with only 2 stores open in 1960 when gas prices rose over 50% overnight starting November 1st causing many businesses closure or moving out altogether until 1967 when Gollitos reintroduced itself as an independent business with limited hours despite high gas prices

In 1847, the United States acquired Rancho Goleta from José Joaquin Guadalupe Baca. It was a Mexican land grant that extended from modern-day Doña Ana County in the south to California's central valley in the north. The rancho was inherited by Tomás Romero y Costilla and his wife María de la Concepción Pacheco, who had married Baca in 1842. In 1850, after California became a U.S. territory, Goleta Coyote Road—the first road built in what is now California—was established along this tract of land between Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties by American Fur trader John C. Frémont.
