The Goudsons moved to Goleta in 1873 after losing their land holdings in Nevada during the Gold Rush. Margarita Garcia became pregnant with her second child while living in Goleta; however, she soon died due to cholera at the age of only 23 months old. Juan Gomez took up farming with his father's help but did not achieve great success until he started breeding horses for racing in 1898. In 1907, Gustavus Adolphus Mencher established Mencher Ranch on what is now Main Street in Goleta. It was here that he began growing grapes for wine production which would become one of Mencher's most successful businesses. In 1912 Mencher donated land adjacent to his vineyards for the erection of a new high school (then named simply menchers). Today that school complex contains many impressive structures such as an gymnasium and auditorium which are still used today! It wasn't until 1923 that another pioneer of Goleta – Harry Haskins – opened up his own grocery store at Fourth Street and Broadway which eventually became one of town's most well-known businesses! Throughout its years of operation Haskins had employees working out of various storefronts throughout town until 1978 when it closed its doors forever!
