Goleta, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. Goleta was founded on October 25, 1883 by Hiram S. Evans and named after his wife's birthplace of Goriàtas, Greece. The population of Goleta was 47 at the 2010 census. The area that would become Goleta was part of Rancho Arroyo Seco Mexican land grant given to Manuel Nieto in 1836. A post office called "Gorceeta" was established in 1841, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1882, Hiram S. Evans purchased Rancho Arroyo Seco from Manuel Nieto and set about developing it into a town site. The first house built in Goleta was the home of Wm Henson on Main Street between First and Second Streets. Initially small and unimportant because it lay outside the growing town center - only 2 blocks wide at its widest - Evans quickly developed Goleta into one of the largest towns in San Joaquin County with over 100 residents by 1886 when he opened up shop on First Street near Superior Avenue (now Interstate 5). By 1888, Goleta had two churches: One Protestant led by Reverend Copley Goodspeed (1858-1924), which still stands today as St Joseph's; and the other Catholic operated by Father James Hogan (1857-1926) which also still stands today as Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. A public school became a reality for Golettans via donation from Mrs John Fenton Worth $5 per pupil from 1889-1893 funded through her successful wine business Colter Vineyards & Winery on East Highway 128 south of present day I-5. Mr Worth later donated an additional $10 per pupil each year until 1907 when state funding began available for school construction statewide A post office called "Gorgeeta" opened in February 1886 due to increased mail volume following establishment of autosurance companies across America including Farmers Life & Casualty Co., Pacific Life Insurance Company & American Express Company Among others . It remained operational until January 1909 when it closed due to lack of interest among the community within 1 ½ years despite being offered several times for sale . In December 1889 Hiram S Evans married Emma Lillie Sprague who had been born December 15th 1865 in Danville, Illinois to Nicholas Sprague Sr & Martha Elizabeth Purdy while they were both students at Vassar College where Emma had majored in musicology under Dr Julius Schnurr with plans to pursue a career as an opera singer but ended up entering Chautauqua University’s medical school instead . Mrs Evans went on to have 4 children: Harry Emerson Marsh (1890-1971), Frances Marion Carruth (1892-1975), Edmund Everett Sprague Jr.(1895-1981) & Roy Harold Sprague III(1901-1993). They all resided their whole lives within walking distance or sometimes less than 10 miles away from their childhood homes providing colorful social life opportunities for many generations . All 3 daughters eventually married local farmers/ ranchers adding another layer of familial support during this time period especially given that most families hereabouts grew crops (& raised livestock) rather than relying heavily upon indoor plumbing amenities common nationally during this era
