In 1860, Samuel Morse sent a telegraph message from Blackwater Valley to Sacramento containing a map of San Francisco with the words "Goleto" superimposed. This event is commemorated by a statue of Samuel Morse at Fifth and Mission Streets in downtown Goleta. In 1916 an earthquake struck the area killing over 100 people and causing widespread damage; this event is commemorated by a monument Interstate 5 between Huntington Drive and Wadsworth Boulevard near Highway 395. In 1933 federal troops burned down local businesses during the Great Depression as part of Operation Choke Point; this event is commemorated by monuments toOperation Choke Point outside of downtown Goleta as well as throughout California’s Central Valley region. On December 11, 2017 two gunmen opened fire inside Goliad High School in nearby Goliad (an unincorporated community) leading to one death before they were shot dead by school security guards; this event has been called one of America's deadliest school shootings ever.
Goleta, California was founded by James H. Goleta on July 29, 1849 in the town of Butte Creek. The town was named for General José Joaquín de la Guerra y Cámpora y Carranza who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as President of Mexico. The first post office was opened in Goleta on November 3, 1851. The county seat of Orange County was moved from Orinda to Goleta in 1857. In 1870, the Central Pacific Railroad reached Goleta from Stockton and began service to Los Angeles. In 1888, during the San Fernando Valley earthquake, extensive damage occurred to many businesses and residences in Goleta including a fire that destroyed most of the town's business district; however no loss of life resulted as a result of the quake. On January 10, 1912, Governor Manuel Ruiz signed into law an act creating Imperial County which included portions of southern Orange County east of Interstate 5 between Gilroy and Morongo valleys. Later that year (July 25), King Philip II bin Abdul Rahman al-Maktoum visited Goleta and gave a speech at Jack London Square where he announced his intention to invade Mesopotamia if need be to protect Persian subjects living there against Turkish aggression
