Goleta, California is a city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. Goleta is located on the Mojave Desert northeast of downtown Las Vegas and its namesake comes from the Spanish word "gobernar" meaning "to rule." The first Europeans to visit Goleta were two Mormon missionaries on their way to Stockton in 1839. Goleta was founded by Captain John Sutter during his 1849 march from Fillmore to Sierra Nevada. He named it after President José Joaquín Méndez y Costilla's home of Santa Fe de la Victoria near Mexico City. In 1860, Don José Peñalosa established a citrus orchard and market garden at what is now First Street and Lane Avenue. This early settlement was known as ", El Rancho de los Padres", ". By 1870, over 100 residents lived in Goleta including many farmers who grew fruits, vegetables, corn (maíz), almonds, watermelons and other crops. The first post office opened in 1865 with Elisha Kerr as the sole occupant; it changed hands several times before becoming Geary Post Office in 1876. During World War II there were large yards made up of galvanized iron for building materials production near what is now Fourth Street and Green Valley Road east of Interstate 15 near Red Rock National Conservation Area; these are now gone but their foundations remain visible as trails along I-15 miles north of town reach them today. In 1850, about one-third of all land west of Sacramento was patented under US federal law by Governor Manuel Micheltorena following Mexico's independence from Spain.
