In 1872, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Goleta on their way to attack Sacramento while supplies were being brought overland from that city. Soldiers stopped at the Brown brothers' store on Fourth Street for artillery rounds and shotgun shells before continuing their journey northward. In 1876, a second magazine was founded by Augustus Henshaw at 422 Second Avenue south of Main Street which functioned as both a rifle range and storage facility for handguns as well as other Firearms used by law enforcement officers throughout Southern California at that time In 1902,gun control legislation was enacted through the US Congress known as "The National Firearms Act" (Pursuant to which all handgun owners were required to register with local police departments). This act made it illegal to possess any firearm not registered with the government; this applied specifically to rifles and shotguns but not pistols or revolvers (which continued to be legal). The first Europeans to visit Goleta were Spanish missionaries, who established a mission in 1769 and named it San Francisco de Goleta. In 1821, Mexico achieved independence from Spain and renamed Goleta as Ciudad Juárez after its president, José Joaquín Juárez. Mexican authorities moved the mission in 1846 due to fear of another Anglo-American invasion; however, it continued to operate until 1861 when it was abandoned by bothMexican and American alike because of lack of support from either side. In 1867, prospectors discovered gold near Goleta; soon thereafter, mining operations began around the town. Gold rush fever caused many people to move into Goleta during this time; by 1870 there were more than 1,500 residents living in Goletta proper and 1,500 more scattered throughout the surrounding countryside. The discovery of oil in Kern County led to an oil boom that started in earnest around 1912; by 1923 over 85% of all production had been located within a radius of Goletta including much of present day Bakersfield and Delano County as well as parts of Tulare and Riverside counties. However, like most other North American oil fields during World War IIOIL lay largely unaccessible due to wartime restrictions on supplies brought about by Axis Germany.-- Los Angeles Times

Goleta, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. Goleta was founded by Mexicans in 1847 and became an Anglo settlement in 1872. The name comes from the Spanish word "gobernador," meaning "chief." The first settler in Goleta was José Huertas who arrived on July 9, 1847. He named his land Rancho de las Dos Vientres after two of his daughters who had died giving birth to him and his wife Elena Aguirre. In 1850, Francisco Lara came to the area and built Villa Lara which still stands today as a reminder of his arrival. In 1852 Hernando Soto established San Fernando Mission near where Villa Lara stood. In 1870 Manuel Antonio Guerrero established Campo de la Purísima Concepción east of present-day Goleta with 1,500 acres (620 hectares). The camp served as a staging ground for cattle drives into California during the Mexican–American War. After Mexico's defeat in that war, American forces burned Campo de la Purísima Concepción on November 16th, 1870 in response to Mexican raids into Bakersfield and Tulare Counties across Central California (). On October 10th of that year United States General John Custer attacked Indian villages along the Tuolumne River south of Yosemite National Park without warning or provocation (). Many innocent people were killed or captured including Victoria Totten (), one of US Cavalry troopers accompanying Custer when he encountered the Indios on October 8th ()
Goleta was founded in 1876 by Portuguese-born Pedro Garci, who named it after his hometown of Golegua in the north of Portugal. The town grew quickly and by 1888 had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1912, Goleta became an incorporated city.
