Goleta, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The town was founded in 1851 by George Hearn and named for General José Joaquín de la Raza y Osuna, who served as the governor of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1850, Goleta had a population of just over 100 people. By 1870, it had increased to 2,500 people and by 1910 it had reached 5,000 people. Goleta experienced rapid growth during the 1920s and 1930s due to its proximity to Los Angeles and its status as a major citrus packing town. However, due to economic stagnation during World War II and the closure of many citrus packing plants, Goleta declined in popularity after the war ended. In recent years, however, Goleta has been experiencing significant revitalization thanks to its location within easy driving distance of both Los Angeles and San Francisco. This development has led to new businesses being established in the town including restaurants, bars and nightclubs as well as new housing developments that are becoming increasingly popular with retirees or young professionals looking for an urban respite from suburban life. Additionally, Goleta is also becoming known for its eclectic architecture which includes Victorian-era buildings dating back to 1851 as well as more recent styles such as Spanish Revival and Mediterranean Revival homes.
In 1848, the Mexican population of Goleta numbered only around 900 people. However, by 1851, there were over 14,000 Mexicans living in Goleta. The Mexicano-American War began on April 15th of that year and lasted until November 15th. On October 24th of that year, a group of 10 men led by José Joaquín Cámpora attacked and killed nine Mexican soldiers at the Rancho de las Pulgas in what is now known as Massacre Hill. On January 6th of 1852, General Antonio López y Costilla's army set out from Santa Barbara to attack the Mexican forces at Massacre Hill. While reaching Massacre Hill, they came upon a party of Mexicans who had been hiding there. As soon as they saw the approaching troops, some of the Mexicans threw rocks at them and ran away while others fought back with swords and pistols. After coming to a stop about 400 yards from where the battle had taken place, General López y Costilla called for his artillery to bombard the site but it was not possible because he was outnumbered three to one by his Mexican opponents. Aftermath TheMexican forces retreated back into Mexico City while General López y Costilla inflicted serious casualties on his adversaries. In response to this event which has come to be known as Battle of Massacre Hill or simply The Day Of The Dead (El Dia De Los Muertos), Santa Barbaraans changed their name to golettanos in honor of those killed in that battle including José Joaquín Cámpora himself who received an honorary title - Patriciano de Golettán
