The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. Goleta was founded in 1847 by Mexican Americans who had fled to the area from Mission Bay during the Mexican–American War. The town started as a small village on a sandbar near Point Conception and quickly grew into an agricultural center with slave labor for cotton farmers in nearby Mexico City. The town became an important shipping point on the Monterey Peninsula for goods brought overland from Asia and South America. A wharf was built along what is now Harbor Drive in 1872 to facilitate trade with inland towns and villages on both sides of the peninsula. In 1907, Goleta became part of the United States when it was annexed by San Francisco; but its position as county seat continued until 1959 when Monterey County consolidated with Santa Clara County. Today, Goleta has developed into a lively community that features a variety of businesses and cultural amenities including two high schools (Monterey Coast College and Monterey Peninsula University), two libraries, three churches, four bars/restaurants, one amateur golf course, five tennis courts (two professional-quality), three parks—one open to the public and two operated by municipal agencies—as well as several thousand acres (100 km2) of agricultural land used for agriculture or residential purposes. With its growing population density - slightly more than that of Palo Alto - Goleta has become one of Silicon Valley's most vibrant communities.

Goleta is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 19,574 at the 2010 census. Goleta is part of the Salinas–Kern City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area now called Goleta was first settled by Rancho Santa Anita Mexicans in 1859 as part of the San Joaquin Valley Mission District. They founded a mission and store there in 1862; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt and named San Francisco de Goleta after their patron saint. A year later, they also founded Mission Dolores (now Mexicoville), which became the center of Mexican culture in the valley and served as a stop on stagecoach routes between Stockton and Sacramento. In 1882, silver ore was found at what is now known as Hillcitadel Mines #1 on the east side of town – this led to an influx of miners and settlers to what would become Goleta. By 1886, Goleta had become an agricultural center with cotton plantations, dairy farms, and fruit orchards. It also became home to numerous Catholic churches including Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Church (1887), Saint John’s Cathedral (1893), and Immaculate Conception Parish School (1910). In 1911, Goleta replaced Stockton as the county seat when then-Kern County was created from parts of Los Angeles County. During World War II, Goleta played host to large munitions factories operated by Douglas Aircraft Corporation until 1945; thereafter it grew into a small community focused chiefly on agriculture until progress began towards heavy industry during the 1970s when golettans embarked on a journey away from agriculture forgoing many water supplies brought about primarily by irrigation farming practices used since pre-Hispanic times that have resulted in extensive flooding throughout most if not all portions of downtown while simultaneously damaging much important built environment including homesites/residential areas along First Street canyonfill dated back over 160 years
Goleta, California is a town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,541 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by Mormon settlers in 1849 and named for José Gomez de la Garza, a military officer who had fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American War.
