Rancho Niguel lay contiguous with present day Goleta east of US 101 until it was sold off in 1899 to wealthy American farmers Harry Fink and John Ellerbe who razed much of their rancho including extensive Native American ruins including a small hilltop temple still standing today known as Purcell's Hill (). In 1912 goatherds living near Whatcom Lake searching for game came across human bones which led physician and amateur archaeologist Drs. Charles Hapgood and Augustus Starkweather to excavate two prehistoric villages at Tuba Point about northeast of where Goleta now stands ()–the first verified indigenous occupants of North America

After Mexican independence was granted to America, American authorities decided to rename the town "Goleta" after General José Mariano Vallejo y Costilla – one of their principal commanders during the war – because there were already towns named "Gold Hill" and "Mission Viejo" in California (the other two being Fillmore and Lodi). The city's growth continued unabated under American rule until World War II when it experienced a significant decline due to manufacturing plants closed down or relocation to other parts of California. However, post-war growth resumed as new industries such as housing construction emerged along with efforts to revive downtown goings on since the early 1990s spearheaded by Mayor Dean Youngblood As Goleta celebrates its centennial this year (2015), some major changes have taken place within its borders: most notably an increase number of young adults moving into what used once been primarily rural areas seeking Exposure To Downtownlife; however much like any other city or community it faces challenges including crime rates which have seen notable decreases recently Despite these setbacks though Mayor Youngblood remains focused on creating opportunities for his citizens through various initiatives such as ArtsAndEntertainment programming downtown which has led to several successes such as hosting large events inside Municipal Stadium where audiences can enjoy live music both summertime AND wintertime
