Goleta is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River and has been a crossing point for travelers since before it became part of California. The history of Goleta goes back to 1821 when two Spanish settlers named José Gomez and Francisco de la Hoz founded the townsite of San Miguel de Tucumán and Goleta del Rio Grande on both sides of the river. In 1825, Don Pedro Menéndez known as "Pancho" arrived from Mexico with Mission San José de Buenavistaplets his wagon train and started overland trade between Santa Cruz and Sacramento valleys. In 1853, Josefina Pacheco moved from Chico to start a mission in what is now Goleta. She founded Mission Concepción y Asís (ConcepciónMission) which served as a center for missionary work in central Contra Costa County until its closure in 1865. In 1870 an agreement was made between various Mexican land grantees including Rancho Nuevo Seco et al., Santana et al., Rancho Aguaje et al., Los Coyotes ranchos y las Comunidades Unidas so that these properties would become part of Alameda County through partitioning the lands among grantees based on numbers assigned to each community by President James K. Polk in 1850-51 under order to increase agricultural production throughout America's expanding westward frontier during the Gold Rush era. The first post office opened at Goleta del Rio Grande on July 12, 1881, by Wm Sibley with supplies brought over from Bakersfield by Pacific Mail Company steamer "Linda". The name change came about because residents objected to being called "Goleta" after another small town near Fresno; this name had been given them by Spanish missionaries who visited their area during early years of goldmining operations thereabouts (see also: Fresno). A second post office was established at Goleta on May 1st 1890 by Jno Lomas with mail service coming from Stockton via steamer "Eagle". This office closed due to lack of traffic in 1906 when telephone service began statewide across all counties in California! The first telephone service began operations within Goletta itself on October 14th 1912 using equipment provided by Southern Californian Telephone Company outof Yorba Linda CA
