Goleta is located on Interstate 5 and State Route 55, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south-southeast of downtown Fresno. The first people to live in Goleta were the Ohlone Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and fruits near Mission San José de Buenavista. European settlers arrived in 1846 when US Army Captain John C. Fremont founded an adobe mission called Santa Ysabel near present-day Goleta. The mission was abandoned in 1848 because of Indians' hostility toward white strangers. A few families lived there until it was razed by fire in 1853; however, they continued to trade goods with the Pomo people for years afterwards. In 1861, George Hearn built a mill on the current site of Calvary Chapel Church which became one of Fresno's largest employers during that time period due to its production of flour, hay, straw, lumber and other items for local farmers as well as export markets around the world. In 1886 Anaconda Copper Company organized a wagonload load purchase from prospectors led by Hyrum Applewhite at what is now Pico Boulevard and Mohawk Road in Goleta for shipment to Anaconda mines that year; this event helped spur development along those roads and today many businesses are situated along them including several banks and restaurants dating back to that era such as Heublein’s Cafeteria (now Heublein’s Pizza), Old Sacramento Saloon (now Donnybrook Inn), Orange Julius Restaurant (now Golden Corral), Ahmanson Theatre District Grill & Bar (later Ahmanson BBQ) as well as some new businesses including Sears Holdings Corporation's Filene's Department Store which opened its doors on July 17th 1976 inside what is now Kmart Supercenter across from IMAX theatergoer Plaza

The first European to visit Goleta was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1769. He named it Point Conception because he sighted a hillock with this name near what is now Downtown Goleta. Spanish traders and missionaries arrived in Goleta in 1821 and founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). In 1835, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Joaquin to Alvarado brothers. The rancho became one of the finest land grants in California. In 1858, gold was discovered in Coyote Valley south of Dell City by prospector Benjamin Hahn and his brother John Hahn.mining operations began soon after and quickly developed into a successful business enterprise that spawned four more generations of miners: Benjamina Hahn (1868-1936), Harry Hahn (1871-1943), Gustavus Bechtel (1876-1945) and Julius Bechtel (born 1902). Gold production continued until about 1911 when there were only a few surface workings left due to depletion from strikes by other operators including Butte Copper Mines Company Ltd., who used local ovens to extract valuable Sullivanite from their deposit at Anaconda Hills; these operations produced over $1 million worth of gold between 1909 and 1913 inclusive! "And so it went - rich vein after rich vein yielded nothing but lead dust as ore was transported 100 miles down the Kern River for processing." Eighteen days after striking it rich while camped atop an exposed ridge above Coyote Valley, John Wesley Powell led his Second Lieutenant's party upriver to where they found payable yellow gold fields beneath fresh snow cover on July 26th 1859 during what would become known as "the great strike". OverripeSullivanite had been washing away since early winter but no one knew it yet because good veins still lay untested under all that new snow! Business boomed thanks to these discoveries which led directly to Page & Mason becoming America's first commercial gold mine operator!
