In 1892, Goleta became the first city in California to have a Municipal Observatory. The observatory was located on the grounds of what is now City Hall and consisted of two small telescopes. In 1933, Goleta Chamber of Commerce rented a building on First Street between Main and Euclid Streets for use as their own municipal observatory. The observatory consisted of four large telescopes surrounded by a three-story academic hall. It remained in use until 1966 when it was sold to the University of Utah for research purposes. From then until 1984, the University used it for astronomy classes and meetings. Finally, in 1984, it was donated to the City of Goleta and is currently used as part of City Hall’s library system. Binoculars were first developed in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother Giovanni Conte while they were working as surveyors for Spain’s new colony on Yucatan Peninsula. The area that would become Goleta was first explored by Mono Indians in the early 18th century. In 1799, Spanish Missionaries came to what is now Goleta and founded a mission called Nuestra Señora de la Merced. The town was named after this mission and grew up around it until the mid-19th century when gold incentives made ranching an important part of local economy. The town of Goleta was incorporated on February 14, 1911 as part of Kern County and became the county seat upon its creation. It experienced significant growth starting in the 1940s as defense contractors moved into the area to build military bases and other infrastructure projects. However, economic decline hit Goleta hard during the late 1990s and 2000s as many jobs were lost due to manufacturing consolidation across Northern California. However, redevelopment has started to pick up in recent years with new businesses opening up along with increasing job opportunities for workers who have experience with web development or information technology

Goleta is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 5,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera Metropolitan Statistical Area. Goleta is located on the banks of the Central Valley River and has a long history as an agricultural center and citrus fruit production site. The first Europeans to visit Goleta were Spanish explorers in 1804, but it was not until 1846 that José Joaquin Cisneros built his Adobe de la Bolsa Rancho El Capitan (now part of Nuevo Laredo), which became a stop on the road from Monterey to Los Angeles. In 1872, George A. Smith developed Goleta Canyon into what is now known as downtown Goleta. In 1907, Mayor William Pritchard dedicated a new public library in Goleta after he succeeded George Fenton as mayoralty candidate with the slogan "A Library For All." At that time, only one other community in Fresno County had such a library - East Palo Alto - and it was used mainly for books. In 1927-28, funds were raised to build additional branches throughout Fresno County so that all citizens could have access to knowledge and education; this led to what is now called "the Goleta Renaissance". During World War II manyGoletsans served in the armed forces including members of Navy personnel who took over their homes during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941; they built several airfields around town for use by our military including Naval Air Station North Island which housed four Catalina flying boats (HMS Eagle Mk IIs) Used by USN fighter pilots during World War II . Many people also worked at local munitions plants during these years including Jethro Tull company who produced artillery shells for both American and European armies
Goleta, California was founded in 1853 by Josef M. Alvarado and his brother Gabriel as a small adobe settlement on the banks of the Santa Clara River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1870 it had outgrown its original site. A new location was chosen, on the east bank of the river opposite San Francisco, and Goleta grew steadily until the mid-19th century when gold discoveries led to an influx of people and businesses into the area. In 1851, Alvarado donated land to create what is now downtown Goleta. The city's first mayor was Lorenzo C. Pico, who served from 1852 to 1863. In 1865, Mayor Pico commissioned architect John Wiegand to design Goleta's first courthouse/ jail which still stands today at corner of Main Street and Second Avenue. By 1865, Goleta had become one of California's most important towns with a population of over 5,000 residents. The railroad arrived in 1886 and soon made Goleta an important transportation center for goods arriving from San Francisco Bay Bridgehead and other points southward. Growth slowed during World War II because many jobs were relocated to wartime production plants elsewhere in Northern California; however, after the warGOLETA regained its importance as a commercial center with a growing population (over 10,000) that relied heavily on government services including schools and hospitals
