Glendora, California is a small town located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 397 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greater LA Area. The area that now makes up Glendora was first populated by Mono people and other Native American tribes. The first European to visit this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1769, according to Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's journal. He named the area San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint. The post office called Glendora "Glinndola" from 1855 to 1870, "Glinndola" from 1871 to 1893, and finally "Glendon" in 1898. In 1886, Glendora became part of the newly formedCity of Los Angeles when it was merged with what were then two rural villages: Belle Ville and Cudahy. At the time of its incorporation as a city, Glendon had a population of about 80 residents and consisted mostly of farmers who raised chickens and pigs for their own consumption or sold them for hay or woolen fabrics to local businesses in downtown Los Angeles; also involved were some individuals who built sawmills on Racetrack Road near present-day Glassell Park) . By 1900 there were 3200 residents in Glendon – more than any other community inLos Angeles County! The first human settlement in what is now Glendora dates back to 1847 when Mexican settlers founded Rancho Santa Anita. In 1881, wealthy American investor Jameson Hanks purchased the ranch and started to develop it into a small town with a population of about 350 people. In 1904, Glendora became an incorporated city with a population of 6,000 people. The growth of the city led to its annexation by Los Angeles in 1909. In 1925, Glendora became part of the City of LA which also Included El Monte and Pasadena; both cities had been annexed by LA nine years earlier on August 15th, 1922. On November 1st 1930 Glendora merged into the newly created City of Hollywood which included all but Watts and Koreatowns as well as most of Echo Park and North Hollywood south to La Brea Avenue). On December 3rd 1944 during World War II Japanese Imperial forces burned down much of downtown Glendonura following their successful attack on Pearl Harbor which destroyed many homes and businesses within that area including Girdwood Hwy & Western Ave (now Glenbrook Drive). This event is commonly known as "The Great Fire" or "The glendonura Blitz".
