Glendora, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 44,853 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in California and the third-largest city in East Bay County. Glendora was founded by Mexicans who arrived from Mexico during the Gold Rush and they called it "Glan" (Spanish for "gold"). The name came from an oak tree that grew near what is now Glendale Boulevard and Euclid Avenue. The first post office in Glendora was established on April 22, 1868, under the name of San Diego de Anza. In 1872, a new post office named Glen Oaks opened and served as the county seat until 1892 when Livermore became county seat. Glen Oaks was renamed Glendon in 1898 after General James Wiggin McLean who fought in Mexican–American War and received an award from President Ulysses S. Grant for his heroism at Chapultepec Hill. In 1906, Glen Oaks was again renamed to honor General McLean when he was given a state funeral at Berkeley Cemetery east of town. The last post office closed on October 15th 1990 due to low mail volume. In 1907–08glen oak grove had over 2500 trees which were cut down because of bad weather but part of their lumber went into making sidewalks for downtown Glendora In 1912 streetcars ran through glen oak grove providing shade on hot days In 1935 a large gas station/residential complex called White Sands replaced most all commerical buildings around town including stores that had been open decades

Glendora, California is a city in southern Kern County, California, United States. The population was 31,554 at the 2010 census. It is the economic and cultural center of Kern County. Glendora was founded in 1892 by John Sutter and his brother-in-law James Irvine as a small agricultural town on the east side of San Bernardino Creek. The original name for Glendora was Rancho Los Angeles de la Valle. In 1894, Sutter married into the wealthy LaFontaine family and changed the town's name to Glendora after their Rancho Los Angeles de las Palmas near Palm Springs. The city's incorporation took place on December 3, 1896. At first it consisted of only a few homes; but within two years it had become an important mining community with over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. By 1910 Glendora had reached its present size with a population of 25,000 people and was one of the most important centers in Southern California wine country. In 1916–18 World War I led to an increase in Brewery production due to increased demand from munitions companies around America during that time period; however local citizens were not consulted about these new breweries as they were considered part of larger corporate entities such as Anheuser Busch (which took over operations when World War I ended). After Prohibition began in 1919 many small breweries closed down throughout Southern California because there was no legal way for them to sell beer without being registered with the state government; however some continue operations under different names until today including Mira Mesa Brewing Company (founded by Rick Overstreet), Hansen’s Brewery (founded by Mortimer Hansen), Toklas Brewery (founded by Lew Toklas), Angelenos Brewing Company (owned by AnheuserBusch), American Brewers Incorporated(owned by Kaiser Aluminum Corporation) and others still operating today out of historical buildings or abandoned factories throughout downtown Glendale including The Bottle House which still stands vacant at 333 W 7th St., now known as "The Depot"
The settlement of Glendora, California began with the arrival of American pioneers in 1847. The town was founded on the San Gabriel River by John C. Fremont and his brother-in-law, George W. Smith, who named it for General James H. Glendower, a veteran of the Mexican War and United States Ambassador to Spain during the war. The first post office opened in 1849 and was operated by Captain David Rittenhouse from Glendora Creek. In 1857, a school was built at what is nowGlendale Boulevard and N Street; that same year, the first fruit orchard was established in what is now Glendale Heights. In 1860, an oil well was drilled in what is nowGlendora and early residents developed a small industry to support the project. By 1865, however, oil production had declined so Glendora became a ghost town; its last resident died in 1865.
