In 1872, entrepreneur George Wickersham developed a cotton gin on his land east of town by filling an old irrigation ditch with water from the Sacramento River and draining it back into the river several times to create a artificial streambed around his experimental plant. Wickersham began marketing his cotton as "Galloway's Cotton." The name stuck and soon became one of Glendora's most well known landmarks; today it still stands as part of GW Mills Inc., which employs over 1,000 people across three sales locations across Northern California alone!
