This building housed additional civic offices as well as twenty-four commercial spaces including: six stores (the largest being Hecht's Drug Store); four restaurants (Taco Bella Mexican Restaurant & Cantina Deluxe Café); two movie theaters (Cinemark Regal 1&2 screens); three banks (First National Bank branch #1 - now SunTrust Plaza -Glendale branch #2 - now Macy's), eleven post office boxes (seven belonging to Great Western Storage Company - one belonging to Bowman's Hardware & Furniture company), twelve public parking spaces, and sixteen residential units. In 1984, after years of planning and construction work by City Manager Jim Tilton on behalf of Mayor Bob Beamon and Councilmember Don Whitehurst – culminating in the unveiling of Mayor Beamon’s “City Beautiful” vision for Glendale – all but one conversion site had been completed when it was announced that the last remaining conversion site would be converted into a shopping mall with office space for local merchants along with underground parking garage access for shoppers! This project was known as “The Pearl” project due to its resemblance to an ornament on glendale hillsides above “The Pearl Place” apartment complex adjacent to I-5 southbound lanes just east of downtownGlendale!
