Glendora is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population of the city was 78,844 at the 2010 census. Glendora is part of the Downtown Los Angeles area. It lies on both sides of the Santa Monica Mountains and its boundaries are defined by La Brea Avenue to the north and east, Highland Drive to the south, and Orient Road to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glendora were Spanish missionaries in 1769. A mission was established there in 1781 by Father José de Urquiza y Aramburu. The name "Glendon" (meaning "place where wheat grow") was applied to a tract of land that included present-day Glendale and some portions of Pasadena when it was planned as part of Rancho San Vicente de la Gaviota Mexican land grant given to Juan Manuel Vásquez for his services as captain general of California during 1835–1836. In 1876, William Mulholland acquired Rancho San Vicente de la Gaviota from Vásquez for $2 million and began subdivisions on it into parcels known as "Ranches Glendona" or simply "Glendon". In 1878, he also acquired title to what is now Glendale from Mexico for $1 million after finding an old map with this name in it which had been misplaced by previous owners. He named his subdivision after his daughter's father-in-law who had helped him buy it—George Wirtz (1811–1880).
