The first white person to set foot on the land now known as Glendora was a group of Spanish soldiers who explored and charted the area in 1769. The town began to form when Mexicans started arriving in droves to work on the new ranchos being developed in the area. The town was originally called San Francisco de la Vaca and was founded by Juan Bautista Alvarado, one of Spain's conquistadores. The name change came about because Spanish settlers found local Native Americans using the name "Fresno" for their location. In 1846, Glendora became part of Mexico and was renamed Ciudad Juárez. It reverted back to its original name in 1857 when it became part of California after Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna appointed Governor Domingo Cavallo as its first post-independence mayor. In 1916, Glendora was also designated as the capital of Kern County after it was combined with other parts of county fromTuolumne County and Placer County.
