Glendora, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of Northern California. The population was 453 at the 2010 census, up from 342 at the 2000 census. It is located in Contra Costa County and it is part of the northern San Francisco Bay Area. The early Spanish settlers in this area named what is now Glendora Ranch after Villa Redondo on the south shore of Mission Bay on Channel Islands National Park. The name "Glendora" originated as an Indian word meaning "place where there are grapes." In 1847, John Cranch discovered a good site for a new town near present-day Glendora when he surveyed Rancho Seco de las Pulgas Mexican land grant #2 which lay east of downtown Glendora. The city was founded on July 14, 1852 by James Wixom and his brother-in-law Amos Richardson with about 60 people under their leadership. A post office was established at Glendon on October 30, 1852, and continued to be called "Gleendon" until1874; it changed its name to "Glendale" on December 15, 1875. At that time the City Council decided to change its name to honor General George Custer who had been killed during the American Civil War while serving with General Order No. 9 commanded by Ulysses S Grant at Battle of Greasy Lake near Sacramento on July 5, 1865 (the first major Ulysses S. Grant military engagement). On January 21st 1898 City Council voted 3-0 to adopt the current name: "Glendale". In 1911 local businessmen organized what became known as Hollywood High School District #1 which included Glendale and parts of Walnut Creek and Northridge; Hollywood opened its doors September 6th that year. Many famous luminaries were students or staff at Hollywood HS including Cecil B DeMille Jr., Buster Keaton, Norma Shearer and Howard Hawks among others

The cities of Glendora and Pasadena were annexed to Glendora in 1917, making it the second largest city in Los Angeles County after Los Angeles. The population of Glendora reached 100,000 people in 1990 and has grown rapidly since then.Glendora is located on the San Gabriel River about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It began as a small farming community with fewer than 10 residents when Captain James Irvine settled there in 1887. In 1913, the City Council designated Glendon Park as the site for a new municipal building which would serve as both courthouse and library; this building still stands today.The first post office opened in Glendon Park on July 15, 1889. The name changed to Glendon on November 1, 1890, due to confusion over two other towns called Glen Devine and Glen Ellyn (both located near Chicago). By 1920, the population had increased to 508 residents; by 1930 it reached 2,611 residents .During World War II much ofglendale was used for military training exercises at nearby Saugus Army Base; during that time many businesses closed their doors because they could not afford to lose any customers from those exercises or from being raided by American troops. As a result of these activities many homes were destroyed or damaged during the war years including one home where General MacArthur lived while he commanded Allied forces in Southern California
