The first Europeans to visit what is now Glendora were Spanish explorers on October 15, 1769 who named it Rancho de las Encinas because of the abundance of oak trees there. The rancho was patented to Francisco Alvarado by Mexican Governor Manuel Nieto on October 18, 1821. In 1846, John Sutter and his brother Charles arrived inGlendora from their rancho near Sacramento after journeying overland from Stockton and Haileybury Valley in California. After a fire destroyed their store building in 1850, they established a grist mill which produced flour for local markets until 1861 when it closed due to competition from the introduction of cow manure into California by cattlemen led by Humboldt County Sheriff George Hearn. The first school opened in Glendora on December 1, 1853 as an addition to Sutter's Store. A schoolhouse/library building (now part of First Bible Church) was erected on North Second Street between Old Towne and Highland Avenues in 1865-1867; this structure served as both school and library until 1959 when it burned down while being used as storage space for the city government archives following its purchase by the City of Glendale effective January 1st 1959 under then Mayor Gordon Parks’ leadership program promoting community involvement during his time as mayor including developing new uses for old buildings within city limits vernacular architecture replaced traditional civic architecture around this time In 1870s two churches were built: First Methodist Episcopal (later Riverside Presbyterian) church located at Seventh Avenue and Broadway Streets cornering Main Street east of towne west side (renamed Our Lady Of The Angels Church after Paramount Pictures actress Norma Shearer who donated $6000 toward construction); Second Baptist church located across Highland Avenues south side between Third Street and FourthStreet before moving across FourthStreet into new facility designated St Andrew’s Episcopal Presbytery Building moved from original site at 14th & Elm Streets SW cornering NW corner block bounded by Eventh Ave., Tenth Ave., Irving Park Rd., Nighth Ave.; services continued at older location until 1907 when second church burned down also spurring development plans for new church site just east of current location along alley separating Tenth Avenue NE from Ninth Ave.. Original congregation later renamed Cathedral Catholic Apostolic Prefecture based out of original Anaheim Apostolic Cathedral demolished 1915). On November 10th 1888 voters approved incorporation [of]Glendon Township pursuant to General Assembly Act No 473…On February 12th 1889 Commissioners met at Council Chambers prior to meeting adjournment voted 5-2 against incorporation Measure #1 setting forth grounds for action contained therein should Association become inactive or unable to support itself hereafter….On March 3rd 1889 Resolution adopted approving incorporation Motion carried An act incorporating Gledon Township having been read three times present voted….A committee consisting principally of Commissioners James Fenton (Manager), Orville Kempton ( Collector), Chas Waddell( assessor), Hiram Smith( treasurer) met April 7th 1889 pursuant to resolution passed March 3rd but no action taken thereto result
