Glendora is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,542 at the 2010 census and it is the largest city in San Bernardino County by population. The City of Glendora was incorporated on December 10, 1888. It grew rapidly due to its location close to the Mojave Desert and its agricultural production including grapes, almonds, and other agriculture products. The city's motto is "Equality through Diversity." The first European settlers in what is now Glendora were Franciscans who established a mission there in 1776. In 1821, James Phelan founded Rancho Seco west of Glendora on land that he had purchased from Juan Bautista Altaolida. The post office called Glendora "Palo Alto" until May 11, 1907 when it changed to "Glendola". On December 10th 1888, the City of Glendora was incorporation with 6 property-owners: John Hankey (3), Wm Hargrave (1), Chas Pritchard (1), Amos Stroud (4) and Dniel Woodward (2). By 1900 the population had grown to 24 families with a total of 158 residents. A dry year caused many crops failures which led to an increase in water usage for local irrigation purposes during World War I; this increased demand also created new employment opportunities as agricultural engineers began designing tanks and other war-time equipment for use by industry after the Armistice ended hostilities. A period of drought followed World War II before government support restored crop production; however per capita rainfall has declined since then leading some businesses such as Home Depot Incorporated closed their doors because they could not find enough customers in an area rated among one of Southern California’s “most arid climates” For many years most residences were single family homes or small groups lived together on terraces looking out over rolling hills watered only by surface runoff from tanks used for watering livestock or for irrigation purposes; these days about 50% of all housing within 1 mile radius is owner-occupied.. In recent years there has been an increase in development around town center including apartment complexes and shopping centers which have led to more traffic congestion on main streets especially at night time when people are trying to get around town without having to cross busy intersections
