A telegraph line from Los Angeles to Pasadena was reached through Glendale by 1880; however, development there did not begin until after completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad in 1883. In 1886, WIlliam Sather bought 640 acres (248 hectares) southeast ofpresent-dayGlendale from Manuel Nieto for $5 million dollars (). On December 6th 1920 residents organized a petition drive with support from prominent citizens such as Methodist Episcopal Bishop John Tague seeking annexation intoLos Angeles County effective January 1st 1921 without formal annexation process being completed due lack of financial commitment from City government or Planning Board members representingat that time primarily single family homes with gardens rather than agriculture industry growth required for county consolidation plans ).
