In 1922, when Southern Pacific Railway built its line from downtown Los Angeles to Long Beach through Glendale, it moved most of its operations to what is now the old rail station at 14th Street and Harbor Drive (now part of USC). At that time many people who did not live withinLos Angeles county voted for Chukarua Park (later renamed Hollywood Park) to be their village center because it was closer to their homes than any other place in the area. Chamberlain dedicated much effort into developing Glendale as an agricultural settlement; he platted over 2 square miles with 12 buildings on May 4, 1912 – more than any other municipality or village in Southern California at that time. He also laid out streetscape features such as curving driveways and large front lawns typical of those days: these were among the first public works projects undertaken by then-Mayor Harry Bridges during his term as mayor from 1915 until 1917.
