The first settlement in what became Glendale was made up of a group of Spanish-speaking Mission people who arrived from Mexico City in 1827. Jesuit missionaries founded Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico in 1838 and then Mission Santa Anita (now Downtown Los Angeles) in 1849. The mission system was replaced by U.S. military occupation after Mexican independence in 1848; Glendale became part of the new county of Los Angeles under President James Kenedy within days of its proclamation. In 1870, real estate developer Gold Rush era pioneer Wasmuth organized a group to purchase 780 acres (291 ha) north of present-day Glendale for $5 per acre (2 hectares). The land formed what would become today's core business district around what are now Union Square and Hillside avenues; Wasmuth named his new community "GlendALE". Some residents objected to this name because it included two letters that were not pronounced "glass" or "land" – they called it simply "GlendALE". However, early residents soon adopted GlendALE as their name and began developing what would become downtown into one of LA's most vibrant areas during its heyday before World War II when much economic activity shifted to Pasadena across La Brea Avenue
