The discovery of gold in 1848 made this area even more important as mineral wealth was discovered all over California. In 1850, investors bought up shares of the Butterfield Road and constructed a road from Gilroy to Stockton so that goods could be transported quickly and easily to other parts of California. This allowed farmers to sell their crops directly to consumers instead of having them shipped around from town to town. During World War II, Gilroy played a significant role in the war effort by helping produce food for soldiers stationed abroad. In 1946, when President Harry Truman declared war on Japan, Gilroy became one of dozens of communities across America that participated in national efforts to provide food for troops fighting in World War II. Gilroy is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 12,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County. The name "Gilroy" is from Spanish and means "place where goods were bought". The first known permanent residents of the area that would become Gilroy were members of the extended Huchiun family who arrived in 1821 on horseback from present-day Alaska. They built their first adobe house on what is now Station Street near what is now University Avenue. A year later they erected a more substantial cabin on an adjacent hillside. By 1850, there were five adobe homes in town – four of them occupied by Huchum family members and one by James Murtaugh (1801-1875), an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Mission Dolores Adobe Company. The first post office was established in 1851, and became known as "Dolores." In 1853, voters approved taking the name "Gilroy" for a new municipal center located on Main Street between First and Second Streets west of downtown San Luis Obispo. The townsite plat was filed with the US Geological Survey on November 15, 1855 y named after Captain José de la Garza y Costilla y Pacheco (1763-1846), Commander-in-Chief of Mexican forces during the Mexican Revolution who had opposed independence from Spain. He had helped lead a column under Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Molina which routed enemy forces at Rancho Rinconada near Monterey Bay on March 25, 1847 In 1860, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain following its victory over that country at Veracruz Cathedral in 1862, Captain José de la Garza y Costilla y Pacheco became captain general designate for all northcentral California territories including modern day Gilroy County as part of Mexican Federal Districts system; this made him ineligible to hold dual citizenship with both countries but he continued to reside in California until his death six years later at age 78 years old while still subject to Mexican federal jurisdiction due to his role in the revolution. As captain general designate he also served as provisional governor of Alta California while Mexico's interim president Antonio López de Santa Anna led negotiations leading up to statehood for Alta California He was buried at Mission Dolores Cemetery east of town off I-5 just south of Highway 101 . His remains have not been found so far but are likely interred nearby with those of his wife Doña María del Carmen Huchum Gómez (b 1840 - d 1912) and their two children: Enrique Huchum García (b 1865 - d 1951) & Marcela Huchum Roldán (b 1870 - d 1957). Gilroy, California was founded in 1853 by Francisco Gilroy and others. The original site of the town was near the present-day community of Petaluma. A post office was first established at the junction of Foothill Road and Washington Street in 1854, and an official incorporation date is not known. In 1871, Gilroy became a city with a population of just over 1,000. The growth of the city led to increased development around it; in 1916, for example, the area around Gilroy had 623 businesses employing 154 people. In 1922, when San Joaquin County was created, Gilroy became one of its six townships. The 1920s were also a time when many important activities took place within the confines of Gilroy; such as World War II veteran Edwin Sanger's founding of Victory Gardens in 1944 and later becoming president of Santa Clara University; Dr. Jameson MacDonald's developing heavy industry on what is now downtown; and much more. In 1969, during Supervisor Don Armstrong's re-election campaign for City Councilorship against incumbent Royce Youngblood (who had been appointed to fill a vacancy caused by Youngblood's death), members from various marginalized groups gathered outside City Hall to demand change from their elected officials--a practice that eventually evolved into what is now known as "the Armstrong Rebellion." After narrowly losing reelection against Youngblood by only 770 votes out of nearly 6000 cast (outlocking him among all registered voters), Armstrong retired from politics effective November 9th 1970 after 36 years as supervisor.
