The Gilroy Optical Manufacturing Company was established in 1918 by George W. Kapp and Albrecht Anschutz. The company produced scopes for use in hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. In the 1940s, the company began producing binoculars under the name of Kapp & Anschutz. In 1957, the company changed its name to Bausch & Lomb. In 1969, Bausch & Lomb merged with Swarovski NV to form a new company named Swarovski Intl., Ltd. Swarovski became a major player in optics manufacturing and is now one of the world's leading optical manufacturers.

Gilroy, California is a city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 32,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera metropolitan area. The town of Gilroy was founded by Juan Bautista de Anza on December 14, 1776 as Rancho Nuevo de Garza y Arroyo Seco. The name derived from Spanish "guala" meaning "badlands" and "rojo" meaning "red". In 1879, when Rancho Santa Clara vecinos applied for incorporation as a City, they were denied because it had not been ratified by the Mexican government as a municipality. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1903 and again in 1960; however two years later an act passed by the City Council included funds to rebuild which started in 1966. The present day downtown district was developed between 1916 and 1934 by James Hutton who designed what is now known as Hutton Place after his friend and mentor Drury Ewingham Hutton who served as Mayor from 1915 to 1916 In 1957, when Donny Dean opened Dean's Liquor Store on Main Street (), he became one of the first retail businesses in town - he continued to operate until 1971 when it closed due to health concerns about lead contamination in his then new building (now occupied by SDSU). Downtown Gilroy did not experience significant redevelopment until the late 1980s with construction starting around First Avenue including such landmark buildings as: The Guggenheim Museum (1983), Kaiser Permanente hospital (1987), and Dow Jones Industrial Average office tower (1990). During this time much of downtown was renovated or rebuilt with pedestrian mall programming popularized during this time Downtown Gilroy experienced significant gentrification following SDSU's opening of its new campus near First Avenue (later renamed University Boulevard) beginning in 1996. At that time Third Street eastward became home to several high-end stores while First Avenue became predominately commercial with large apartment complexes built throughout the early 2000s

This became one of the most successful businesses in town with a wide variety of products available to customers including breadfruit preserves, bacon, eggs, flourishes (such as garlic or onion powder), potatoes (of all shapes and sizes), butter, milk and other groceries. During World War II Gilroy played an important role as an airfield servicing many military installations throughout southern California including El Cajon Naval Air Station and Point Mugu Naval Air Station. The city's economy also grew greatly during this time with employment coming from such areas as construction work on new highways and airports; manufacturing; agriculture; service industry; retail trade; real estate development; tourism; among others
The town of Gilroy was founded in 1853 by the brothers Elias and George Gilroy. In 1865, it became the county seat of Contra Costa County. The first post office in Gilroy was established in 1855, and the first courthouse was built in 1866. The town had a population of about 25 people when it incorporated as a city in 1907. It populations peaked at over 500 people during World War II, but declined after the war.Gilroy is now a small town with a population of about 60 residents
