Gilroy is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. Gilroy has been called the "Gateway to the East Bay" because of its location on Highway 24 and its close proximity to major East Bay cities such as Oakland and San Francisco. The first documented settler in what is now Gilroy was Manuel Nieto in 1836. By 1838, José Feliciano had arrived and built a hacienda near present-day downtown Gilroy. In 1847, Rancho San Rafael de las Pulgas were granted to Antonio Maria Margarita Ruiz. She named it after her paternal grandmothers' rancho located north of Monterey Park in Mexico state: Dona Ana de Ruiz y Salinas (1814-1885). In 1851, Josefina Sanchez married José Márquez and they founded an agricultural colony known as Rancho Californios al Montejo near present day El Sobrante Boulevard and Hwy 101A (now Katella Street) in what later became Contra Costa County; this colony continued until 1861 when it was disbanded by Mexican authorities for not paying taxes. In 1862 the towns of Concord, Pleasanton and Richmond were established within Contra Costa County by order of General Mariano Castro who felt that these western towns were neglected by their eastern counterparts due to their poor transportation infrastructure which allowed goods exported from those areas to be shipped eastward instead. At the same time,General Castros brother Santiago ordered all Spanish speaking people living west of San Francisco to leave within seventy days or face execution under Title 5 USC Sections 241 et seq.. This caused many settlers including Mexicansadrafters such as Pacheco and Moreno to migrate into northern California during this time period in an attempt to find new land that would allow them back home again. Some of these pioneers called themselves The California Gold Rush because they thought that they could find goldnear Sutter's Fort on Mount Shasta where large amounts of gold had been discovered previous years but no one had ever taken any serious steps towards exploiting this resource since there seemed no way for anyone other than a few lucky individuals with access to expensive equipment and deep pockets to make a significant return on their investment given the prohibitive costs involved throughout much of California at that time... Many early residents including Josefina Sanchez's husband José Márquez decided against following through with his wedding because they did not have enough money for tickets out of county even though he offered them free passage if they followed him back eastwards... On November 20th 1860 US soldiers fired upon a groupof Mexican rebels led by Dominguez who was killed along with five others at Rancho Los Andes south of today's Gilroy just prior To Ohlone Indian Reservation boundaries being set
