Gilroy is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Santa Clara River and its namesake road, State Route 26. In 1853 it became part of Rancho El Sobrante which was divided in 1872 between José Estrada and Hermann Sánchez. In 1906 it became part of the City of San Luis Obispo and has been governed by the city government since then. The first permanent settler in Gilroy was Manuel Nieto who arrived from Mexico in 1836. He named his land Rancho El Sobrante after his father-in-law's rancho (ranch) in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. A year later, Juan Bautista Silva arrived with his family from Chile and donated 640 acres (260 hectares) to Jose Estrada for settlement. On May 8, 1837, Estrada postmarked a deed for 320 acres (120 hectares) to himself and James Purdy along with two other men as trustees under the name "Rancho de la Mesa" or "Rancho del Cerro". The grant included rights to trade with Mission Valley Indians and hunted deer on private property within the limits set out by Estrada until 1840 when he sold all hunting rights to Fray Francisco Javier Ortiz y Urdiales for $2000 cash plus 10% interest every year thereafter payable semi-annually on November 1st. From this date until 1861 there were no deeds recorded or activities taking place because Mexican federal troops had taken over much of central California during that time period including Gilroy except for some cattle transactions between livestock owners within Mexican territory and their US ranch hands outside of it). In 1847 Josefina Valenzuela married Pedro Funes who owned about 804 acres (310 hectares) north of where Gilroy now stands east of present day SR 26 & SR 101A near what is today Red Bluff Road; this land lay south/southwest of what is now town center & east/northwest of present day US Highway 101A between CR 505 & CR 605E . They moved about forty miles westward on October 15th following passage through Guatemala Bayou by ship carrying goods they had gathered while living among the Maya Indians near Coptos Lake; they arrived at their current location near present day CR 505 across an unnamed creek east side of Sinaloa Creek flowing into Sinaloa River opposite CR 505 just before its confluence with Ivar Gomez Creek adjoining Coyote Hills Wilderness Preserve watershed boundary As one result of this move about 175 families made contact with various Native American tribes living along Coyote Hills Wilderness Preserve watershed boundaries including Kaweah Indian Nation located southwest corner Coyote Hills Wilderness Preserve watershed boundary; these contacts contributed greatly to helping stock up on food needed for future settlements which would include most notably Mission Valley Indian Tribe located southeast corner Coyote Hills Wilderness Preserve watershed boundary& adjacent Black Sands Prairie Wildlife Management Area which lies within modern day Santa Clara County proper although parts extending into Alameda County were also visited during this time period usually involving trading horses or clothing items). About 1850 many more people started moving into central California due primarily to new discovery associated with goldmines discovered at Comstock Lode but no large village formed until1853 when Rancho El Sobrante was organized as partorced from Rancho La Mesa Grantee minus James Purdy who returned home briefly prior to his death in 1850 aboard ship sailing back home from prospecting trips throughout California before reaching Monterey Harbor.. By 1860 there were 543 residents living inside city limits according as well 179 families residing outside city limits making up total population 9046 individuals inhabiting 980 parcels comprising: 7883 housing units ranging from 2 story dwellings built withoutfoundation walls only using planks laid flat against earthen embankments covered w/hollow logs stuck vertically onto masonry wall faces above ground level replacing traditionaladobe rooflines); 20 small businesses totaling 11 very productive those providing jobs for 100+ employees both inside & outside city limits; 82 agricultural producing assets totaling 3200 bushels or 47 metric tons yielding an average yield per acre being produced yearly versus 1400 bushels or 21 metric tons yielded annually statewide averaging 13 bushels per acre yielding a healthy return on investment over a five year period). This healthy return allowed townspeople generally To purchase all manner Of groceries they might need regardless Of distance Or cost locally grown produce unavailable here typically; clothing not available here either local manufacturing products such as textiles etc., typically costing 50% more than national retailers even though quality may be lower due often To variations in transportation sources familiar items like toilet paper manufactured locally often coming complete w/rags whereas nationally distributed brands such as Tide are often requiredto bring home additional supplies ). All told these factors led Townspeople generally To feel comparatively comfortable having relatively high standard Of living typical For Central California during this era despite occasional shortages occuring due especially To unpredictable weather patterns). However starting around 1870 productivity dropped off significantly leading some citizens start selling gardens, raising chickens couponing eggs & other produce purchased fresh daily at local grocery stores becoming known as early morning farmers markets . As mentioned earlier Townspeople generally felt fairly contented life continued going largely unchangedalbeit occasionally experiencing shortages

In 1857, Gilroy was jointly chosen by Mexico and California as the site of their new state capital; it would be renamed Sacramento after Calafia's King Sancho II of Spain. In 1861, the city began to grow rapidly due to the discovery of oil reserves in what is now Kern County. By 1870, Gilroy had reached its peak population with over 60,000 residents. However, despite this growth, Gilroy experienced several controversies and failures during its early years. One such issue involved an attempt by some members of the city's governing body to establish themselves as a separate political entity; this resulted in an eviction from The Rancho de las Flores in 1872. Another issue occurred when some residents attempted to build a school on private land; this led to a clash that ended with one resident being killed and several others injured. Despite these issues and setbacks, however, many people consideredGilroy to be one of the most vibrant and prosperous towns in California at the time.
