Gilroy is a small town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on State Route 99 between Stockton and Modesto. The first human settlement in Gilroy was made on March 8, 1847 by John C. Fremont and his companions as they explored the area near present-day Stockton. The site of present-day Gilroy was surveyed by George Wickersham in 1848 and homesteaded by James Witherspoon in 1849. In 1850, the land became part of Rancho Nevada de la Paloma which then passed to David Kendall and later to Allan Nevins. In 1863, during the American Civil War, Brown & Hardin sold Rancho Nevada de la Paloma to John Pemberton for $5 million after losing an auction against another bidder that same day. Pemberton renamed it Grantwood ranch after General Ulysses S. Grant who had given him support during the war and also helped him acquire much of the new country west of Sacramento including many miles of California's central valley than he had previously owned or leased from other ranchers or Indians. Grantwood was one of several large ranches run by wealthy Californians such as Humboldt River Navigation Company executive Jens Ludwig (1811–81) and banker Augustus Kelley (1812–92). Others were Cosmopolitan Land Company; Pacific Gold Rush Mining District No 1; Forty Mile Open Range Mining Districts Nos 3 through 5; Donner Party Mines; Kernville Mines; Fillmore Valley Mines; Folsom Valley Mines etc., most notably Donner Party Mine where Jedediah Smith discovered gold on January 24th, 1846 at an elevation of just over 7500 feet (2300 meters). A plaque marks this spot within a short distance of Interstate 80 exit 427 southbound off I-680 near milepost 16 eastbound off I-680 northbound where Smith discovered gold while working with his party led by Joseph Riese on January 24th, 1846 (). After World War II ended in 1945, much of what is now Gilroy was acquired between 1950 and 1960 by Northern California Reclamation Authority due to its aridity – including portions now occupied by smaller towns like Capistrano Beach (), Pleasanton (), Livermore () etc., following lands reclamation projects initiated during that period pursuant to National Environmental Policy Act section 404(a)(1). Today only a small remnant remains from what once lay here: a few buildings at corner Weldon Avenue/7th Street NE and some agricultural land remaining northeast thereof where Highway 99 used to cross
