The name "Gilroy" originates from Spanish settlers who named it "Gilroy de la Hacha". The first European to visit Gilroy was Alonso de Alvarado on October 15, 1769, while exploring what is now southern California for Spain. In 1821 Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted Rancho Santa Cruz to Juan Bautista Gilroy and his brother Vicente Gilroy. The brothers began ranching operations and soon built a town on their land called Villa Rica about 12 miles (19 km) south of present-day Gilroy. They named it after their hometown of Ramosplano in Burgos Province in northeastern Spain where they had been born and raised. From this small outpost grew Villa Rica into one of the most important towns in Northern California during the 19th century because of its strategic location between Campo Viejo on the north coast and Redding on the south coast; its close proximity to ports; its good transportation links with other northern Californian cities such as Oakland and Sacramento; as well as its importance due to its riverine commerce which developed around two canals that connected Villa Rica with Stockton through Rio Agrio and Yuba River valleys In 1871 an act was passed by congress creating San Joaquin County out of parts of Sonoma County including part of what later became Orange or Los Gatos In 1892 Don Fernando Crisanto purchased Rancho Laguna del Norte from José Castro for $10,000 Don Fernando's brother Lorenzo Crisanto acquired Rincon Point Lighthouse from Don Fernando in 1916 for $2,500 The first post office opened at Villa Rica on November 1, 1896 On May 1, 1909Gilroy incorporated as a city under state law reporting a population then of 6 people
