The history of gun target shooting in Gilroy, California dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, the area was part of Mexico and there were no legal restrictions on firearms. Consequently, people from all over the United States came to Gilroy to shoot at local gunscrewers who would set up shop in various parts of town. One such Gunsmith was George Meehan who operated out of a small shed on Biddle Street between 1847-1851. In 1853, Meehan introduced a new type of target called a “Hexagon” which became very popular because it could be easily struck by any projectile. The Hexagon target allowed shooters to practice multiple shots quickly and accurately without having to wait for an entire round to hit its target. In 1859, David Hogg started shooting targets outdoors at his home on Washington Avenue in downtown Gilroy. Soon after, other citizens followed suit and began using Hogg’s targets for their own shooting contests and activities. From then on,gun target hunting become quite popular in Gilroy! By 1865, Hogg had developed his own company which manufactured high-quality targets called The Girdershots Company Ltd., now known as Liberty Arms Corporation (LAC). LAC continued producing these targets until 1963 when they merged with Colt Armory Group Incorporated (CLA) to form Colt International Inc.(CI). CI has since been acquired by Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems Limited(ESL). Gilroy is a small town in Northern California, located about 25 miles north of Sacramento. The population was 362 at the 2000 census. The name originated from the Mission San Francisco Gilroy de Cárdenas and most likely means "place where many chicken coops are built." The area that now makes up Gilroy was first populated by Native Americans including the Ohlone and Pomo tribes. It was part of Rancho del Norte Mexican land grant given to José Maria Borrego in 1827. In 1853, John C. Frémont surveyed the area and named it after General James Humboldt, who had explored parts of California before becoming governor of Mexico City in 1846. A post office called Gilroy was established in 1850, and remained in operation until 1906. A number of businesses have been located here over the years including an Imperial Tobacco Company factory (1896-1901), a J B Lumber Co.'s sawmill (1912-1915), a Ford Motor company assembly plant (1958-1960), Pacific Gas and Electric's power plant (1963-1965), Pixar Animation Studio's headquarters (1988-1998), and a Costco warehouse store (2011-) In recent years, much development has taken place around the town center with new housing developments being built on both sides of Highway 99W which runs through town. One such development is known as Northgate Village which opened in fall 2013 and contains approximately 1,000 apartmentsites across 10 buildings with shops, restaurants, music venues, etc., as well as a dog park.

Gilroy is a small town in central San Joaquin County, California that was founded by Mexicans in 1852. It became a U.S. town on March 12, 1859. The first post office in Gilroy was established on December 8, 1861. In 1907, the towns of Bakersfield and Mexico were consolidated into Gilroy, making it the only incorporated municipality in San Joaquin County other than Fresno with this status. The population of Gilroy peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but has since declined to less than 7,000 residents due to suburbanization and other factors. In 1908 an Act of Congress designated part of San Joaquin County as the Gibson Ranch Reserve in order to provide grazing land for cattle and sheep ranchers who grazed there until 1933 when they were removed by federal government officials because of their destructive fire effects on the grasslands around Gilroy Municipal Airport (now known as Ronald Reagan National Airport). This event is considered to be marking the beginning of the end for ranching hereabouts due to changed grazing conditions and increased development around airports and other public places within minutes’ drive of ranches such as Gilroy Municipal Airport. The last known cowherd was killed near Garza Road east of town by a hunter in 1933; however there may have been others before that time. The situation came about because developers wanted access to these easy-to-develop areas for housing which would create competition against ranches for feeder calves from larger operations located closer to big cities or markets where meat could be bought fresh or frozen without having to go through long drives back home. Although some people still grazed livestock on Gibson Ranch Reserve today (according to one source as late as 1984), most operation stopped around 1933 because it was too difficult and expensive to maintain large herds during times of drought or other difficulties encountered elsewhere along the Great Western Plain Valley floor where much grass died off during those years due Toe water passage changes caused by shifting fault lines
