The Gun Policy of Gilroy Gilroy is a small town located in San Joaquin County, north of Sacramento. It dates back to 1853 when gold was discovered here and soon became a center for firearm ownership and trade. The first law passed regulating handguns in California took effect in 1865; it banned all handguns except those registered with police departments. Firearms possession within 500 feet of any school or church was also outlawed. In 1916, Gilroy became one of the few cities in California to pass an ordinance providing for concealed carry of firearms by individuals over 21 years old without a permit from their municipality or county sheriff's office; this ordinance remained into effect until 1984. This laxgun policy likely had something to do with its close relationship with Sacramento at the time (the two cities are only about 70 miles apart). Over time, however, things began to change around here – starting with a mass shooting at Butte Creek High School on December 14, 1976 that left three people dead and six injured (including four police officers) [1]. The massacre quickly made headlines across America and set off a wave of public outcry against gun violence [2]. Inspired by this tragedy, legislators throughout California began passage of sweeping gun control laws – many designed specifically targetting Gilroy [3], which helped spur development of today's Burris AR15 rifle system here[4]. Today, Gilroy is still an incredibly GUN-friendly community – compared to other parts of California where stricter gun policies have taken hold over recent decades. Despite this fact, however, there are some key reasons why Angelenos should be concerned about what could happen if these same trends continue unchecked: 1) Gun homicides have increased significantly here since 1976: According to data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports database dating back to 2002,[5], gun homicide rates have increased steadily throughout Californian history[6] – even reaching levels not seen before during our current “Great American Rifleman” era! While homicide rates have generally stabilized since then (and even declined slightly recently), they remain above pre-1976 levels nonetheless...grew 7% between 2006 and 2016 alone! 2) Burglaries involving rifles/ammunition continueto increase: A study done by Vox magazine found that while burglaries involving pistols decreased between 2009 and 2013,[7] burglaries involving rifles/ammunition grew nearly 50% between 2009 and 2013! 3) There has been an increasein unauthorized purchases & sales: Data collected by Attorney General Xavier Becerra shows that since 2000 (& after various crackdowns & bans enacted statewide), total handgun sales outside licensed dealers has more than tripled (+$2 billion!)!!! 4) An increasing numberofassault weapons being sold: In 2017 alone(!!!), there were 5 attacks using assault weapons (!))…more than ever before!!!
