It was in 1892 when the first firearms were imported into Gilroy. The gun industry had begun to take off in California, and many farmers and ranchers began to purchase pistols and shotguns for their herds. By 1894, there were over 20gun shops in Gilroy alone. The demand for guns continued to grow, so businesses began manufacturing parts for handguns as well. The most common part made for handguns at the time was the barrel, which was made of hardwood or brass. The popularity of handguns led to an increase in shootings throughout California. In 1897, a gunman killed six people at a hotel in San Francisco with a single shot from a revolver. In 1899, another gunman killed 14 people at a park in Sacramento with three shots from his shotgun. These massacres helped make California known as the “Gun State”; it continued to be one of the most dangerous states in America until prohibition repealed in 1934. During prohibition, gun companies turned their attention towards producing rifles instead of handguns. This change allowed them to produce more consistent pieces that could be used across multiple brands and models without having to worry about compatibility issues. However, this also caused some companies to go out of business due to competition from other firearm manufacturers who were able to produce more reliable products than they did.

In 1912, Root opened another gun shop called The Pistol Place which became very successful due to its high quality weapons and customer service. This store was eventually sold to Remington Arms Company in 1924. During World War II, many people in Gilroy enlisted in the military or served on active duty (such as during the war’s atomic bombings). As result, many firearms were acquired or made locally such as machineguns and cannons. Some of these weapons still exist today including some dating back to World War I
Gilroy, California is located in the Central Valley of California and is a small town with a population of just over 8,000. The name Gilroy comes from the Spanish word for "calico" or "tombstone." The town was founded in 1849 by brothers José and Manuel Gilroy. Jose was born in 1824 and died in 1895, while Manuel was born in 1829 and died in 1916. The towns first store was built on what is now the corner of Main and Proctor Streets. In 1850, José's brother Francisco opened a mercantile business at Sixth and Mission Streets. From this early period until 1865, whenGilroy became an unincorporated community, trading occurred through personal relationships rather than formal intercourse. The growth of agriculture led to increased traffic on County Road 12 which crossed the Santa Cruz River near present-day Gilroy. This road became known as the Main Street of Gilroy because most businesses along it were open only during daylight hours. By 1870, there were six stores and two grocery stores in Gilroy; one Negro store operated by John Fenton had been opened about two years earlier. A post office was established at Gilroy on July 1, 1874; it remained open until 1907. At that time, mail service was provided by stagecoach service between San Francisco and Sacramento daily except Monday nights when it terminated at Rancho Cucamonga due to construction work within that locality.. In 1886 local photographer George Eastman took his first picture of people living around him hereabouts-two years later he would take his famous photograph of Mrs . Lincoln coming down the street from her house into downtown San Francisco
The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in 1892 by John Morse Winchester and David H. Winfield. The company became known for its high-quality firearms, including the Winchester Model 1894 rifle and shotguns, as well as its ammunition. In 1907, the company merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington Rand. The company continued to produce quality firearms and ammunition until the late 1990s when it closed down citing global competition.

Gilroy was founded in 1797 by Juan Gilroy, a Spanish official. It became part of the United States in 1846. The town was named for General José Joaquín de Arregui, who fought in Mexican independence and later served as president of Mexico.
