That year saw significant changes take place in California due to World War II; newly acquired land became military bases and power plants were built throughout the state including one near Gilroy that produced plutonium for nuclear weapons development; and many people moved into towns and cities across Northern California because of wartime shortages of food or housing materials. After war ended, many jobs disappeared from California due to competition from overseas firms but also because Federal spending on community services such as education increased markedly (see post-war boom). Mission Santa Cruz established on April 6, 1821 by Father Junípero Serra became the first mission in what would become San Joaquin County. The town was founded on November 30, 1847 by members of the Mexican-American War Veterans from Monterey Heights east of Stockton. A post office called Blytheville was established in1849; it closed in 1865. On January 15, 1861, during American Civil War foropensession of California under President Abraham Lincoln following his Emancipation Proclamation, Major General John Custer's 1st Regiment Kansas Volunteer Cavalry entered town from Sacramento and Founded Camp Reno just north of town across Amador River from what would later become Township 3 (now Round Lake) The camp served as an encampment for Union forces until they withdrew on December 13th and burned all their supplies including cannons and horses leaving only saddles and horseshoes behind On July 24th 1863 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell attacked this camp while it slept with simultaneous explosions near nearby Sutter’s Mill resulted in 4 dead Union Soldiers along with 2 officers & 33 enlisted men killed with many more injuries
