Gilroy is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gilroy Fault. In 1899 Gilroy was chosen as the site for what would become UC Berkeley's first campus. The Gilroy area has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and has several interesting historical events that have occurred there. One event is the Battle of Gilroy which took place on November 7, 1846 between United States forces and Mexican forces. The battle resulted in a U.S victory and ended the Mexican War. Another event that took place in Gilroy was the 1906 San Francisco earthquake which caused extensive damage to buildings in the town and killed more than 60 people. Today, Gilroy is an important community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it. Some of the activities that are popular in the town include agricultural production, fishing and hunting, as well as music concerts and art exhibitions.
Gilroy was founded in 1777 by the Spanish as part of Rancho San Francisco. The area that is now Gilroy was first inhabited by the Costa Rican people, who called it "Tierra de los Castillas." The area was later claimed by Spain and given to Antonio Muñoz y Planes, a landowner from Barcelona, Spain. In 1821, after California became a United States territory, Gilroy became part of what is now Contra Costa County.
