Gilroy is a small town in eastern California. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. It is located in Contra Costa County. The Gilroy Hills are a region of hills that run along the western edge of Gilroy and include extensive oak woodland, vineyards, and farmland. The townsite was first settled by Native Americans in the 1800s, who named it after Captain George Roderick Gilroy who had been killed during the Mexican-American War. In 1849, San Francisco entrepreneur Jedediah Morse bought land here for $10 per acre, which he called "Morse's Valley." He started to build a settlement on what is now Main Street and named it after himself. By 1850, there were only 10 people living here. Morse’s Valley grew rapidly due to his business acumen and his investments in irrigation systems and other infrastructure projects around the area. He also built an impressive home near present day Middlefield Avenue and State Route 441 (now Highway 12). This house remain standing to this day and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Gilroy. In 1862, when California became a United States territory following its entry into World War II, Morse sold his property to John Atherton for $5 per acre ($103 million today). Atherton began to develop much of what is now downtown Gilroy into what it remains today: a mix of commercial buildings including stores, restaurants, offices/condos etc., as well as some residential areas with large single-family homes dating back to the 1920s or earlier. Atherton's success led him to buy other properties around downtown Gilroy until he had control over almost all of downtown by 1930. From then until his death in 1962, John Atherton was one of America's largest real estate developers;his development helped make Gilmore Row one of Silicon Valley's most significant neighborhoods during its early years (1920s thru 1960s).
