The first Europeans to visit Gilroy were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Gaspar de Portolà on December 8, 1542. The name "Gilroy" probably derived from the Nahuatl word ōtlīgāhli or "place of many flowers." In 1777, José Joaquin Córdoba y Urquiza named this place Pueblo Concepción de los Olivos (Concepción of the Olive Trees). In 1821 Antonio Vallejo founded Rancho San Lorenzo at what is now known as east end of town. On January 1st of that year he patented title to Rancho Gilroy which included most of what is now downtown Gilroy. The City Charter was ratified on November 6th, 1827 with a population of only 100 people. At that time it consisted just of one block between Main Street and Second Street and two blocks south of Court Square. A fire destroyed much of downtown on February 14th, 1861 but did not damage any important buildings such as St Mary's Cathedral or the State Capitol Building - these were rebuilt in more recent times. On July 7th 1872 Mayor Dominguez authorized annexation by Santa Cruz due to increasing crime rates in neighboring counties caused by 1) gold intoxicating liquor being sold legally over open door fronts; 2) influxes from new agricultural areas intoSanta Cruz County; 3) large numbers military veterans moving into towns throughout California during Reconstruction period; 4) large number families coming out for Temperance Movement rallies across America following earthquakeinSan Francisco Bay Areaon April 19th 1865 On October 26th 1886 James Wickersham donated land to build what became University Park across First Street from Railroad tracks west towards where Union Station now stands. This was an important donation because it allowed for students living north of Univeristy Avenue to continue attend school without fear of deportation under newly implemented American immigration policies during the late 1800s – until then almost all Mexican students had to leave college before they could work their way back upriver
